I couldn't just leave it sitting there
« on: November 04, 2011, 02:03:34 PM »
Had an SKS, have an AK, but been looking at the Mosins and other bolts. Saw this one in a local shop and couldn't just leave it there in spite of the bubba job. 91/59, 1943, Not really knowledgable about this, but matches, guessing force-matched? Not a fan of drilling and tapping or the screw-on bolt handle but the threaded muzzle break did me in. Looks exactly the way I got it. Will put a different scope on it, probably low power in the 1-6 range. Put a couple through it after bringing her home and I'm glad no one heard me because a school girl would have blushed. I chuckled all the way home, never knew what I'd been missing.

What the heck did the previous owner do with the bolt?  "drilling and tapping or the screw-on bolt"? Will it hold up to hard use? The grain on the wood actually looks pretty good.  Other, than the bolt, an "interesting" rifle.  Yeah, your right, the "threaded muzzle break" is  8) !

Hows she shoot? Good I hope.  I really didn't know how to interpret this, "glad no one heard me because a school girl would have blushed".  Hope it was the good kind of @!#$%^&* Hot dang! ;) ;D ;D ;D

It was the good kind OldSchool, I was laughing and talking to my self all the way home, hot ####, holy $%^& with a big old grin on my face. I tucked a few $$ in her chamber and didn't feel a bit guilty ;D
ATI makes a kit with the scope mount and that bolt-on bolt handle for the Mosin, kinda ugly and pretty easy to screw it up, but it looks like someone put some time and $$ into it. The previous owner refinished the stock. The bastard rifle I've always wanted...

hillbill--I usually don't share how much, but l'd say I bought it for probably 1/2 of what the previous owner had in it.

That is a beautiful stock for a mosin.  It should make a great hunting rifle in that form.  Im a sucker for short barrels.  The threaded barrel leaves room for differant attachments too!

funkey screw mounted bolt handle

That bolt handle is part of a particular scope mount kit, the scope base is fastend useing 2 #10 machine screws in the top the receiver ring,
The gunsmith that did my Mosin, drilled all the way through, A little bit of the screw thread protruded through enugh to rub on the bolt when cycleing after shooting, make shure your threads dont protrude
Make damn shure your chamber is very clean, lacquor case fouling will basicly lock your gun closed on a empty after fireing.
This particular type bolt handle holds really well (red Locktite) if your skeptical you could have that bolt handle Tig welded to the bolt body (The bolt head is separate so replacing the bolt body wont affect headspace) or you could buy one the already modified scope type bolt body's available on line.

That's the best kind of "hot ####, holy $%^&".  ;D Happy for yah! Now all you have to do is get a deer with it this year. Congrats on the great find! Now go out and enjoy that rifle!

hunt-m-up:  you got a sweetie there.  If you were using 'blushin' language on the way home it means the previous owner did a good job.  Those babies will shoot but man, they are loud even without the brake.  The muzzle brake youreally do not need even though the 7.62x54R cartridge is twixt the 308 and 06 in power, and closer to the 06 than the 308 at that.  You might be able to 'quiet' it down a bit by removing that brake and screwing on a solid (non-perforated) brake - they work as well to reduce recoil but focus the muzzle blast more effectively so it does not sound so loud to anyone next door....  just a thought.
