magnaporting vs a muzzle break?
« on: August 20, 2011, 06:09:41 AM »
I have a hand cannon and am thinking of magnaporting or having a muzzle break installed.  What are the pros and cons?  Is either quieter than the other?  What do you think the costs would run?

Thanks,

I've had several rifles Magna Ported mostly because it was the only brake available at the time. It reduced the recoil and I don't recall the noise level being worse* then before.

I liked what I got because it didn't change the look of the rifle. Nothing I own now require a brake. If I needed one I'd go back to the same system.

Two rifles came into my possesion with a ported barrel one being a Marlin 450.

Both work and brakes vary greatly in their noise levels but the most effective also seem the loudest.. They direct the gases at the muzzle to the rear and the more they direct and the greater the angle the greater the effect and the more blast is directed to the rear... I don't like either..but understand the need exists.

That extra bang is multiplied with a roof over you on the Range. Out in the sticks you hardly even notice it.

I had a muzzle break installed by magnaport on my 44 mag srh.To tell the truth I don't think I really needed it. I just figured the more pleasant it was to shoot, not that it was unpleasant before, the better.
They removed the frontr sight, cut the barrel, threaded it and installed the break and reinstalled the front sight further back. I don't like scopes on handguns so I wanted the sight back on.
They did a great job. I can't remember what the cost was but it was on their website. I also had them do an action/trigger job, recut the forcing cone, number the cylinders.

I've had quite a few guns MagNaPorted...I'm now down to only 1...a Rem700 in 375HH and I believe it helps.  I was going to do my 300win but decided that I could easily handle the recoil.  I've had a slew of 44mags done...am down to only 2 now and really don't feel the need even with 300gr bullets.  I also have a 480Ruger SRH.  I shoot 370gr Cast at 1160fps...kinda all I need and also have Hogue Tamer on it as well as on the 2 44mags.

I LIKE MagNaPorting allot....I just don't seem to NEED it......I'd say do it though...can't hurt anything except your wallet.  BTW....I've had MagNaPort do allot of gunsmithing for me from rifle work to SBH custom conversions....their work is 1st rate!

On a handcannon Magnaporting would be the easier to get a holster as it does not change the profile of the stock gun.
A pair of electronic ear muffs when hunting may be the way to go.  They are getting cheaper the pairs I have were about $65 each.

You need lots of powder(gas) to make those brakes efficient. A heavy bullet with relative little powder won't show much recoil reduction.

They cut the barrel down on mine and installed the brake, returning it to the original length.
