I am lucky to have a firearm friendly wife. The only problem with that is that she claims one once in a while. I still get to visit, clean and feed them though. Wife has actually taken me to task for NOT buying something I am interested in.

I learned a long, long time ago that a woman cannot appreciate most of the things that men do.
It is kinda like I don't understand the need for more shoes.
Since she can't appreciate or agree or condone that which she would not want, I just don't bring it up.
I am not doing it to satisfy her, nor, am I going to get her to say anything positive.
I started buying golf clubs and bringing them home when i noticed that if I did not say anything she did not notice. The same goes with guns.
The only thing I have bought lately that she had an immediate reaction to was the Pony car. Folks, that got a reaction---but she got over it.
Blessings

Not long ago my wife was commenting on the money I had tied up in guns and shop tools.  I sat down and made a list of everything I had and the current replacement price.  Then, I made a list of her sewing machines, quilting machines, etc. and compared them.  I showed her that the grand total of all of my investments didn't add up to one of her expensive sewing machines.  That quieted her down some, but she still asks what gun I'm going to sell in order to purchase a new one.
Thanks for the stump

That sewing stuff ain't cheap either.  My wife bought a machine that was around 4 grand plus a laptop that is required to operate it and 1500 bucks worth of programming.  The thing is, I even helped her pick it out because I wanted to make sure she bought enough machine to be able to make some of the things I wanted to have made. ::)   I would never compare prices though just to keep score because for us it isn't a competition.

I think you just answered your own question, including the one about the porch steps. In my youth, I bought many a gun I did not need, when things for the family, and home would have been far more practical, and less self-centered.
Now in my 60s, I wait, and have even sold all, yes all, of my safe queens. I am more into saving, and WE, than ME. If that makes any sense.

I resemble that , my wife has supported me and never complained about what i buy , that has had more effect on my habits than open complaints.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
