Medications are driving me nuts
« on: August 17, 2011, 07:45:30 AM »
Went shooting this morning with my hunting partner.  Every time I sat down at the bench to shoot I got frustrated.  My heartbeat kept the cross hairs moving.  This normally happens at settings above 15 power.  Today I was using 4 power, and every heart beat the scope moved.  Doctor put me on a new med that is supposed to strengthen my heart beat, yea it does.

Then there is the Niacin.  Guys, you ever want to know what the wife's HOT FLASHES are like, take this stuff for a while.  Man, it sets you on fire.  Does not hit right away, takes an hour of two before it hits, but boy when it does, you know it.  You break out in a sweat, your face turns red, you just can not cool down.  Your whole body tingles and is hot, last 10 to 15 minutes.  Last night the wife and I was shopping in Fairbanks.  I took my meds while at dinner in a restaurant.  The flushing did not hit till we were on our way home.  Temp was cool last night so I had the top up on the car.  At seven mile village the heat hit, I stopped and put the top down.  Wife started laughing, offered to drive so I could stand up on the way home.  Felt like taking her up on that, as I took off my long sleeved shirt.  Drove home in my tee shirt, with the temp in the 50s.

Don't know if you can or for sure if it will help but my doc has me take a baby aspirin about 15 minutes before my niacin and it keeps my from suffering from those hot flashs.

Been dealing with a strong pulse in my cheek for years as mentioned I learned to shoot between heart beats. A long shot for me in my neck of the woods is 100-150 yards. but if its something you need you'll have to adapt and overcome.

I've not experienced any bad side affects from Plavix.  I do worry sometimes about getting cut, or injured when out in the woods.  Oh well can't live forever.

I understand the side effects of niacin, I experienced it a time or two.
But the low dose aspirin about 15-30 minutes before taking it has eliminated the flushing.
I got off zocor about a year and a half ago because of it's side effect.
The niacin for my cholesterol has it in great shape.

I have been on a heavy pill diet for about twenty years now.  I had blockage, no heart attack but required surgery and three by-passes.  At the time my cholesterol was hitting the 570 mark and the triglycerides were over 1100.  My cardiologist had a hard time trying to get them under control, finally he sent me to an internal medical doctor and I was put on niacin.  I now take 3750 mg of niacin (1250 three times a day with each meal), Crestor, one 81 mg aspirin, plavix and a multitude of vitamins and minerals.  My cholesterol has been about 150 for the past 6-7 years and the triglycerides are down to 240.  It has been 22 years since my bypass and according to the doctor after an angiogram last December the lines are still open. The niacin does work!

The niacin doesn’t bother me anymore but it really lit me up at first.  My wife accidentally took a 500mg tablet one night; I had to take her to the emergency room where she was given something to counteract the niacin.  The average person who is not use to it could take 100 mg and get lit up.

the old lady for the last 47 years has a vodka martini waiting for me when I come home at night from work. I then have one glass of wine with supper. Seems to have done the trick for me.

Yes for years they thought Leeches would cure blood disorders. It didn't work for Geo. Washington. It sure seems these doctors make alot of mistakes over time. ::)

With all the medications I also bleed and bruise very easy.  On a recent fishing trip I slipped on the steel deck of the ship and slid about 8-10 feet on my elbow, even with a long sleeved shirt all the skin was peeled off.  The shirt was khaki , the blood down my right arm and side turned it red almost immediately.  One of the deck hands came over and ask me to put on a life vest, said if I went over the sharks would do a number on me before they could get me out.  I wore the vest and was very cautious for the remainder of the trip.

I can relate to the Niacin fun. I take 1500Mg of it every nite. Really gives you a warm fuzzy feeling ;D ::) Doc told me to take 1 81Mg baby aspirin before the Niacin about 30min before going to bed. I found 2 worked really well to turn the the heat down. of course it feels pretty good when it's wintertime  ;D  But the good part is that Niacin (B3 vitamin) is really working and does the job. I also eat a lot of jalapenos and Habeneros , so I like hot. :o   God Bless to all.
