Mauser Gunsmith Needed
« on: August 18, 2011, 03:17:33 PM »
I have a 98 action and a Douglas Barrel in 7MM Mauser.  I need a gunsmith that can set the barrel, final chamber and D&T for a scope.  I would prefer one that is close to SW Ohio.  Any ideas of the what this might cost me?
Another question is the usual practice to remove the "hump" on the rear, top of the receiver and to remove the stipper clip fingers?
I have a Boyd's stock and plan on doing all the finishing and assembly myself.
Any help out there?

Screw the barrel in yourself and rent a reamer and go/nogo guages and do it yourself. Very easy. Just use lots of cutting oil.

There is no need to remove the hump and stripper clip guide. Get a Leupold base. It is designed around the hump and if your smith happens to get your holes drilled a little out of line, which happens more than you know, you can still line up the scope properly by using the windage adjustment screws on the back of the base.

Surely there is a gunsmith in your area quite capable of doing your work.  If not, google website of Mark Skaggs gunsmith, who is located in Oregon.  I've sent him 4 or 5 mauser rifles to rebarrel and etc. from Texas.  He does good work and is reasonable in his prices, which are posted on his website.  Been awhile since I've sent him a barreled action, but shipping cost using the post office was around $40 for both ways.

Don't forget to get your bolt handle bent.
