Wow, am I bummed...
« on: August 30, 2011, 01:15:33 PM »
:( Finally got to the range to try my new to me 30-30.  I was really disappointed with the way it shot, groups ran about six inches at 100 yards, ammo used was Remington 150gr Core-Lokts and a handload with Hornady FP 150's with 748, about two grains below book max.  The scope used was just pulled off another rifle that did well with it,  I don't think its a scope or a mount problem.  This makes three in a row, a stainless .243 and a Ultra .308 had serious grouping issues as well.

The 170 grain Core-Lokts shoot better.

Hope so, I'm going to the local Wally World tonight to buy a box to try.  This is really gonna mess up my plans of using Hodgons LVR powder and some 150 gr NBT's, I fear

Have you refreshed your memory on what it sometimes takes to get a handi to shoot well?

Sometimes it simply takes shooting it to get the groups to shrink.

I suggest you hit the "books" and re read the FAQ's for tips.

Good luck,

What CW said!!  I think you need to get back to basics and make sure you're covering all your bases in the Handi Basics sticky, the 30-30 is probably the most reliably accurate H&R made, the factory standard is 2" or less, 3-shot groups at 100yds with factory ammo, if none of your Handis will do that, either you're doing something wrong, (most likely oil on the latch or shelf, not closing the action firm enough, etc...  ;)) or they all need to go back to H&R for repair. I searched all of your posts and found no complaints on your 308 Ultra until now, only one complaint on the SS 243 that you sold.  ???

Don't clean the bore.  They shoot best dirty.

Some times you just have to look awhile. I never started with a bullet, just picked 4 or 5 that were readily available, a couple of powders, started at the middle of the powder range for baseline, picked out 1 or 2 that grouped the best. Then I load up 1 or 1.5 grains increase, if the groups shrink, I go on up, if they enlarge I go back and drop the same and try it. The worst shooter I have so far is a 280 that stays around 3.5 to 4" at my 200 yard range, nothing to write home about, but usable on deer size game, I am now going to try varying seating depth, sorting cases, and another powder before I decide to give up the effort. I also try to find one load for each rifle and then just match that load up with the usage. Over the years I have shot up 10-15 times as many rounds in load development as I ever fired in practice and hunting together. I usually shoot 3 rounds from the deer guns in the fall to check the zero and foul the barrel, and one at a deer. Don't give up yet, if you get through a couple boxes of bullets and a pound or so of powder with no improvement think about it then. Best of luck.

All the loads I have tried in my .30-30 barrel have shot well.  I've used Remington (150 and 170); Federal (125 and 170 NP).

First time I took mine to the range, it shoot about 1.5 in@100. Took it home added the O ring, loaded some 165 gr. Nosler Bal tips. Next trip, she shoots 1/2to 3/4in.  One of the best shooting Handies that I have.
As previously mentioned, make certain the latch is free of oil. It's gonna be my companion in the woods.
