One heck of a plinking session

Of course, some really enthusiastic shooters might not even miss losing 14000 rounds of ammo.

Hopefully somebody had a good time with it.

Not real sure about Ft Bragg but I have seen this much ammo in .50 BMG laying out in the woods at Ft Benning.  Told the Top Sgt about it and he said to ignore.  Some armor unit had an upcoming IG inspection and was over TOE allottment.  Solution; write a blank trip ticket for laundry detail on three 6x6 trucks, load the excess ammo, drive around out in the wooods until IG over.  Drivers got shaky and dumped ammo in the woods, brought back crates to post dump, and came home.  14000 rds of .223 not all that much to get rid of, someone probably just read thier supply paperwork wrong and panicked.  On one armor base they found 4 M60 hulks buried in the parade ground.  Paperwork said these particular tanks were lost in Viet Nam.  Every combat unit wants more than TOE allotment of equipment, until The IG shows up.

you guys nailed it already.   we used to get tired of humping the excess ammo and every bush that we passed we would throw bandoliers of 200 at a time under.   i always thought that if ammo got scarce, all a person would have to do is walk around in the woods near the live fire ranges.  you could find more in an afternoon than you could use in your lifetime if you know where to look.
