I made a shoulder holster from an old boot top and one of my dads old 46" belts.  It's big enough to sling over coats and stuff and since I don't have my CCW yet, I have to keep it open.  I like the cross chest versions though, because when I use a hip holster, it seems to get hunt up more and it's hard to get out your pistol quickly seated.  Mine cost me $0 and a little stitching and keeps it quite securely.  ;)  If you were looking to putchase and want one something like this check these out:

I would think a lot would depend on your usage and personal preferences. Me, I like western  holsters, high ride style ( not those silly Hollywood buscadero rigs). If you spend anytime in the saddle you'll find that a crossdraw style is more comfortable (especially with a longer barrel) and you'll have easier access to the weapon. Also no bullet loops around the back as in rough country the bullets will hit the cantle and can work out, and will also mar the cantle. I use 12 round "sliders" that I can move around to the side. If you're into a more modern style, then I would agree that a pancake style like mentioned above (with all the carry options) would be the ticket.

I agree with painted horse, think about the way you'll use it most and what would help that.  For me it's been Simply Rugged to give me more options for what I might do, strong side, cross draw, shoulder harness, and even IWB using inside out snaps, which covers anything I really need.  I love the western high ride original type rigs, but really have no practical use for them unless playing around, so I went with something else.  I also heard people like the Tom Threepersons type holsters for single actions,  I've been looking at those for some time now.

It sure would be nice if you can put some rigs on and try a 6.5" out of them. We arent all built the same and you may find a high ride, strong side to not want to clear your barrel tip 'cause your elbow dont go high enough'. A crossdraw will solve that and allow you to hitch it to some different spots around your hip for whatever you want to sit in.
I dont much care for the 'cowboy' belts, that tongue/buckle doesnt have enough adjustment for me with different clothes, etc. A good 1 3/4 or 2" 'work belt' (a bit long) has been much better and I like the 'sliders' too for cartridges.
Another issue may be that malady of 'mature gentlemen' of 'nobuttatall. Without braces (suspenders to the youngsters) a heavy belt gun is just always pulling me down, and I hate having to hitch my pants and gunbelt back up all the time. A shoulder rig solved that for my 4 3/4" Ruger NMBH, maybe not your solution, though.
