45-120 & Trail Boss
« on: August 29, 2011, 10:21:22 AM »
Gcrank1 was interested in how Trail Boss would work in the 45-120.  I tried T.B. a while back and ran the bullets through the chrony but didn't really try to shoot for groups.  Today I did try a 3 shot group @ 100 yards and got a 1 1/8" group.  The best I have every got shooting jacketed bullets with the 45-120 is a .75" group so I am pretty pleased with the TB performance.  The load was;

30.0 grain of TB (32 grains is 100% density with the Norma brass)
400 grain LRN GC (did have any plain base 45 cal bullets) @ .459"
OAL 3.72"
No Crimp, bullet touching the rifling.
Win Large Pistol Primers
Shooting from a bench, semi rested (a gun is never still in my hands >:( )
No Chrony today, but this load was 1370+fps when I shot it a few weeks back.

BB,
That bullet at that speed has the momentum of a freight train. 1 1/8" groups is nothing to overlook, there's plenty of bolt guns that can't shoot that well. Keep up the good work and let us know when you shoot a squirrel with it. :o

Thanks, Dinny

I got funny looks last year squirrel hunting with my 357 Maxi, I think I will keep the 45-120 in the gun safe unless one of Oldsoldja's elephants heads in my direction. ;D

Good morning Tom,

You 120 guys crack me up ;D ;D ;D  Ya build a canon and the first thing ya do is try to make it a popgun.  Why? ???  I can run 405s out of my 22 inch '70 anywhere from subsonic to 2 grand.  Granted, the '120 cartridge alone inspires awe at the range. Everyone has seen Quigley, and get wide-eyed when they see the actual monster.  As for this skinny kid, I'd love to shoot a full load in the '120 ONCE, and then go on convalescent leave for a month :'( :'(

Despite the fact you guys are nuts, we still love ya.

Pete

Pete,

I got the TB powder to try because gcrank1 asked me about it.  My normal loads for this gun are 300 or 350 grain jacketed bullets at 2500 to 2600+ fps.  It was fun to shoot the low velocity stuff but they are all gone now and I will be back to heavy recoiling loads next time the 45-120 goes to the range.  I would like to try Tyler's 2,550 FPS 405 grain SP load but I only have 2 pints of blood on deposit at the local blood bank. ;)   The reality is the recoil isn't that bad because the gun weighs 11 pounds and I am shooting a slow powder, I4350.

Me bad.... :P , please forgive me........
I kinda like the idea of 'BPE' equivalent loads in that cigar case, seems natural. No abuse to you or gun and it groups too; life is good!

Blake,

TB is the only powder you will see me shoot in the 45-120 w/o a hand on the forestock.  Kinda like drivin' a Z28 with a revolution limiter. ;D
