Hi everyone, I have an old CVA I built back in the 80's in 50 cal. It's been sitting in my gun safe for several years since I now own a few custom guns and don't shoot it anymore. I was thinking about drilling out the barrel and putting a 36 cal liner in it and turning it into a small game rifle, to give it a new life. The barrel is 1 inch across. I was wondering if anyone here has ever done this and would it be worth the cost for the liner. I have a friend at work that can drill out the barrel. I would think it would be cheaper than getting a drop in barrel. The rifle is really good shape and I put a good aftermarket lock on it. I was going to let my son use it in muzzle loader season but I found a Lyman GPR new for 160 bucks and couldn't pass it up. The liner would run me around 120.00 . If I bought a drop in barrel it'd cost over 160.00, that's if I could find one. Any thoughts on this? ...Steve s

steves you should have mercy on the carrier of the relined to .36 barrel that is 1 inch accross the flats! Think of what it will weigh. A real chunk gun!

Shop around! I bought a new unfinished barrel from CVA for $85 a couple years ago.

Or - you could make it into a nice 12 guage smooth bore and shoot .7some caliber balls outta it.

Grump, What caliber did you get? I'd be willing to go up to 40 but not any bigger. I had to repair my stock several years ago because, I broke a ramrod loading it which caused the gun to slip out of my hands and hit the ground(really cold that morning). As far As making a smooth bore I already have a Blackpowder 10 gauge which kicks hard enough to easily break the CVA's stock again. Thats the problem with most out of the box Kits too much wood taken out where you need it the most. The weight issue isn't a problem. I have a Sharps rifle that weighs in at 9 pounds and it only has a 25 inch barrel, it's a 40 caliber. Thanks for your imput guys...Steve s.

Re-lining a ML barrel should be very easy/straight forward and easy to do. My thoughts would be go for it!!

$120 sounds kind of high for a liner though, which is not even a barrel, but just a rifled tube. Maybe shop around a bit in that respect.

The barrel I bought was a .50 cal. Sorry,I reread your post and now I understand what your looking for. I agree with super rat about puting in a liner.Check out Track of the wolf or Dixie, make up a wanted add and post it on some BP forms.
