Just starting out
« on: August 28, 2011, 04:57:38 AM »
Found a .243 Handi that I'm trading for and have been browsing through the stickies the past two days. It's not a SL, so I'm hoping accuracy will be acceptable for me (1.5" or better @ 100 yds). From old stock, I have some 100 SP, 90 SP, and 58 Vmax sitting around to try and figure out how well of a dual use this rifle will actually be. Primary purpose is for 150 yrd deer. Mounting a Burris 3-9x40 Fullfield II with Ballistaplex reticle. I can't wait to get to the range and start the experience. Anybody using Federal Fusion ammo? Used it in a 44Mag and was really impressed, but haven't used it in rifle calibers yet.

I'd say dont do it. Turn around and walk away now.  But if u insist welcome to the addictive world of Handi's.  Sounds like you have a plan in progress already.  Have found a few SL's but keep waiting for the next really great deal. Hope you give us range reports and updates  Todd/ 3leg

It was a youth model so It will be great for when my son gets big enough to handle it safely.  I put an adult synthetic buttstock I had picked up ages ago in a trade for a box lot of misc. parts. The barrel is marked as fitted to the frame, but the frame is hollow where the stock attaches? Doesn't that indicate the weaker frame not for the higher pressure rifle rounds? I may have read that one wrong though. If it's safe on this reciever, I'm planning a short range trip tomorrow morning after work. Time to hit the stickies, again.... Will get pics of the results, but I know it will need forend work.

ETA:  Found it...SB2 frame 2005 manufacture. GTG  :D

Well, I got to the range and had a quick bite to eat while I waited for 8 am.  My boresight got me on paper at 100. The link below is my rifle and "oops, knew I forgot something" rest.

Here's what I had in the locker from a Model 70 Featherlight a few years ago.

GROUPS:  Mind you, I've been up since 6:30 am Sunday and vision started fading.  I'm happy so far. The 100 gr pills show promise as do the lightweight vermin poppers.  I can't wait to try again when I have a proper rest and not suffering fatigue.  Bedtime...

My 243 Handi (22" std bbl) loves the Fusion 90 gr loads.    Extremely accurate and is exceedingly deadly on hogs.    I have one deer to this load but have had over a dozen hogs.    This is the load my son used up until this past season - then he decided he liked my 3030 Handi even better!  :-\   Oh well guess Ima gonna hafta git a nudder Handi  ;D ;D ;D

My 243 Handi (22" std bbl) loves the Fusion 90 gr loads.

I will have to pick up a box to try out.  There are marks in the forearm that indicate that there is unwanted contact.  I was going to free float it and may still yet, but it may wait until next summer.  It is shooting good enough for now, but for the groundhogs next summer I'll want it much tighter.  I may end up having to send it in for service.  The barrel release lever flops badly in both positions and the ejector is only extracting.  Perfect opportunity for trigger work and a spare barrel too.  Maybe right after I fill my tag.  Will keep ya posted and I'm sure I'll have some questions as this journey continues.

Don't look for 90gr Fusion, they only make 95gr, and they do shoot excellent as do the 100gr Power Shoks from Walmart.  ;)

See the FAQs, the questions you've asked so far are there including the best factory ammo.  ;)
