When I was a youngster, I wanted a Python for a duty pistol so bad I could taste it. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, looks like the classy Python. I eventually owned two, on separate occasions. My first one, shocked me, as I didn't realize the difference that the LONG ACTION made in rapid fire police training. It was way slower than a Smith in these drills. Plus with the leaf spring action, the trigger pull weight STACKS as the hammer comes back. It was so discouraging I sold it and went back to a Model 19 Smith.
Later the "lure of the look" of the Python got hold of me again, just in time for another Instructor's school which lasted 2 weeks. Firing almost 800 rounds a day got my attention for good this time. Although I was one of the best in the class, I was constantly whipped by the faster actions of the Smiths, and on rapid fire with speed loaders, I found out the hard way that the Colt once hot, would lock up due to tolerances being so close. It was a great pistol, but not for fightin. At least for me.
That first weekend, I got to go home, and the following Monday I showed up with a brand new Model 19 Smith with one of my own action jobs. Now I was back up to speed, and finished in the very top of my class.
But as I said: Nothin looks classier than a Python.
