aint as young as i used to be
« on: July 22, 2011, 01:57:03 PM »
Had the 475s out today. Shot a few through the linebaugh and about 50 through the FA. Found out two things. Both of these guns still shoot. There a couple of the most accurate revolvers ive ever owned.  no 50 yard groups today just 25 but both guns will blow one hole at that range.with the ballistic cast 410 lfngc and 28 grains of wc297. After a bit over 60 rounds i was done in. My wrists were actually in pain. I can remember 15 years or so back taking the 475 and 500 out and easily going through 300 rounds of full power ammo in a session. Sure cant do it anymore. got to admit it was fun though. Its been a while since i shot anything bigger then the 454 or 44 mag.

Lloyd, I remember 'somebody' telling me that it takes three times as much pain medication (Tylenol, Advil,Aspirin etc) afterwards compared to taking it before. Ive tried it out before shoveling snow and such and some warm-up stretches and/or a hot shower to warm and loosen the tissues and a couple of meds before the activity, and it makes a big difference. Maybe try some wrist and hand exercises and a couple of meds about 1/2 hr, or so before the session.

Lloyd, While I do not own the likes of a .475 my wrist seem to be hanging in there with the .45 Colt & .44 mag. My eyes are becoming more of an issue though. I have to wear my prescription glasses more n more for shooting even though they are not required for driving. The glasses are kind of a bummer because they make it near impossible to induce a blurr on the target while keeping the sights in sharp focus.

The front sight needs to be in focus, good groups can still be shot with the target and rear sight blurring a bit. A lot of target shooters taught me that and Ive shot enough good hits to prove it to myself (yeah, they were right....). In Bullseye a number of shooters use the aperture eyepiece, which will sharpen the image across all three. You can make a 'cheapie' by using a small patch of black electricials tape with a small hole in the middle affixed to your glasses. It is a little futzy to find the point you really look through the glasses to get the hole position right, but for a right eye shooter it is often further in toward the nosepiece than you would have thought. This also can get your eye out of the 'correction' zone of the Rx.

Got to admit that a few years ago a .475 or .500 would have been a must have. Now I find it tough to justify brining out the .454 even though practice is needed. There is a definate side effect from pain............IT HURTS. Holding that confidance level requires use, but not as many as I used too before I reach for a pop gun like the .44 mag. Those big guns sure put a differant perspective on things.

Thanks. Seems like an advertiser right here at gbo offers some static cling merit disks. Might give the tape a try first and see how it goes.

LOL, you tough guys crack me up, 44mag pop gun... :D  I'll agree in comparison to whats out there nowadays it sure isn't the big bad guy it used to be, but the 44mag still has more recoil than the "average" shooter can master.  Good for you Lloyd, glad you can still put em' where you want... full house 44mag or hot 45 colt is pretty much my limit anymore, and not many of those.

It ain't the recoil that bother's me, it's the sight picture.  I have no-line tri-focals, and if I tilt my head just so, I can see the sights clearly.  It also has helped me to very carefully apply flat white paint to the top edge of the front sight.  I can pick that up easily in the dark woods.  I think recoil is more in our head than it is actually painful.

Mike, a fellow member here on GB is selling a replacement rear sight for the Ruger that is a peep blade. I just installed mine a few days ago and took it and fifty rounds out for a test run. I put it on an old model SBH 44 mag and am very pleased. It makes seeing the front sight and target very easy again.
You are right painted pony, the 44 mag is about the upper end of enjoyable shooting for me too. I do hate to admit it though.

I've never owned or for that matter shot anything bigger than a Smith Model 29. Carried a couple of those on duty for a while. But Lloyd. I have shot thousands of rounds thru Model 19 Smiths, and over the years it has caused arthritis in the hands and wrists, and was one reason I got rid of my Smith 686, and Model 60. Age. A wonderful reminder of our past.

While I'll never own up to being anywhere near the age of you graybeards I will acknowledge having a few years on me... 8)   My personal answer is to shoot the 475 and 500 bore beasts on a regular basis.  Long breaks and long full power shooting sessions are what makes me hurt..  Working on Trail Boss loads too...
