Thoughts on age/proofmark ???
« on: August 26, 2011, 01:32:05 AM »
Picked up a very nice little bronze cannon barrel in a new carriage.

Looks from the patina to be in keeping with the date of 1755? 1795?, 17??.

However any comments on its possible age welcome
Any thoughts on the proofmark would be welcome.   Or if the date numerals appear to be correct for the 1700s.
Should be facing in the other direction if real??

Photos from vendors website.
   Your 2 cents please.

Thanks

Nice little cannon, this is just my opinion ......
I do not believe the date as to the period of the piece, the style of mouldings etc. say it is later, in addition the date is upside down. if it were the date of manufacture you should be able to read it from the breach end - not the muzzel end. another feature that leads me to think later is center line trunnions, I think this is much later after 1850 or as late as the 1890's

There are so many good counterfiets out there that I would never be able to tell if it was real or not.  My level of expertise just wouldn't allow it.  That possibility has to be taken into consideration.

Dimensions

Bore 1"

Tube:

breech ring to muzzle 12"

cascabel to breech ring 1"

so 13" overall

Probably will end up with a field carriage based on John Mullers book

exlimey,
You've sent me photos attached to an email, so you could certainly post them here; once you learn the routine it's as easy as that. Would you like some help with the photo posting process?
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.
