did I ream my 357 wrong?
« on: September 20, 2011, 09:06:17 AM »
hello.  I reamed my 357 to max several months ago.  Last week I just got to relaod some 180gr ssp.  I had a case that I cut the slits in to find the overall lenght.  When I put the case with a bullet in it the bullet never even touched the lands.  Is that normal or did I do something wrong when I reamed it.  I used the reamer from this site.  When I reamed it I did not go cut into the case lip section on the barrel.  thanks again.

Still have a long throat with this reamer. At least the three i did did.Load them as long as you can and load them up stout.I put a pretty good crimp on mine but my bud doesn't crimp his. Both will shoot a clover leaf at 100yds.No worries that i can find.

Long throats are common.

If you where careful NOT to cut the rim with the reamer, BUT allowed it to just tough ti you cut the chamber just fine.

Did you cut the case ot allow the bullet to move in the case?  I find its easier to remove the extractor and carefully insert the seated bullet into the chamber.

Good luck,' CW

orig,

The GBO reamer seems to make long throats in the Maxi.  I stopped reaming when I could chamber a 357 Maxi case w/o the bullet (extractor removed).  I stopped before the reamer ever touched the rim cut.  If I seat the Hornady 180 HP/XTP or Speer 180 SP till the bullet touches the rifling there is almost no bullet left in the case.

That's good to know BB.  Considering doing mine and I'll be checking progress with a MAX case as I go.  Any other advise on this reamer, & reloading for it, etc?  Someone..?

Since MAX brass seems a bit rare, still wondering if I really 'need' to do mine, mostly have store bought 357mag. The 454 ream works fine with 45colt, though.

Finally, how many folks did barrel shorty's with 357 MAX?

Be Well...

rd,

My Maxi is a factory shorty (talo 18.75") and the Maxi rechamber helps a lot.  It will push a 180 grain jacketed bullet to 1800 FPS and 100 yard MOA with a pistol rated powder charge.  I have never loaded my Maxi to Max since it still has the SB1 frame.

Mine was the first barrel done with the GBO reamer, it's done 79 barrels since, no one has complained about accuracy yet.  ;)

Excellent reamer will easily re-chamber a 357 Mag to a Maximum. True 6 deg ramp. You can chamber completely or stop when your target / hunting load touches the bore. I have re-chambered 3 Handi Rifles with this reamer and all three shoot excellent groups.

The old 'seat the bullets out into the rifling' tip has been around forever, it may or may not result in smaller groups rifle to rifle. If the throat and leade to the rifling is right, as this reamer does, it will likely be fine. The big issue as mentioned, is not going so deep that it cuts the rimseat.

My Handi Maxi is 16.5 inches and shoots .38's, Mags and Maxis very well.....just differently from the other two.  Mine shoots .38s accurately, and they sure aren't up in the rifling.

I was I think number 78 to use this reamer. I was out shooting it this morning. 158 sierria jhc above 17 gr 2400 one ragged hole at 50 yds. 158 lee cast swc with gas check 1 ragged hole above 14 gr 2400. Actually it was the same ragged hole for both. This was with max cases.  With 357 cases and 14 gr of 2400 shot same ragged hole with both the jacketed and cast but to a different point of aim. Tried some 38's but was not happy. So I'm gonna use the maxi brass. When I reamed mine I used a magic marker to blacken the rim recess and as soon as I saw a tad of shiny I quit. I.m quite happy with the results.

thanks for the info again guys.   I did cut two slits in the case one across from the other and filed them smooth so the bullet would slide in the case.   I feel a lot better now that I did it correct and as soon as it touched the case lip I stopped reaming.   I liked BBs idea but seeing how everyone here said the throat is very deep on the ream and everyone is still getting get groups I guess I should not worry.    Just need to keep loading and keep shooting it.   thanks again
