45-70 Range Report
« on: September 06, 2011, 09:45:47 AM »
Finally I had some success with my new 45-70 at the range:
I made a series of loads with Trail Boss trying to get the most accurate one.

Bullets:  Montana Bullets 300 gr (mould RCBS (82051)) with gas check, sized to 0.458"
Powder: Trail Boss
Cases:  Unknown (marked with two little stars separated by a curved line)
Best load:  16 grains of Trail Boss
Best group at 100 yrds:  2 inches
Velocity:  Not measured (yet).

Two inches at 100 yrds is not that bad, and it is equal in precision to the factory loads from Remington with a 300 gr hollow point.
My next step is going to be to use 16.0 and 16.5 gr of Trail Boss and the same bullet, but the bullet sized to 0.459".
I have to add, that I installed a scope to be able to develop the loads.  Once I figure out the best recipe for my rifle, I'm going back to a peep sight.

By the way, while using the hammer extension, I was getting repeated failures to ignite.  As soon as I took it off, there were no more problems.  Anybody experienced this before?

Good shootin'.  Your brass is by Starline, that is their headstamp.

The hammer extension thing has been hashed over.  There's info in the FAQ, but the physics of it is that you are adding mass, thus slowing the hammerfall.  There's also a FAQ entry for the Wolff Spring conversion, which boosts power.  It's a little more intimidating of a process, but many have done it.  There are some other style hammer extensions in the FAQ though, so a lighter one might work more easily.

Did you try loads of about 20.0 TB behind that lightweight?

GCrank1,
Almost.  Max capacity with the 300 gr bullet in place was 19.7 gr., so I tried loads from 14.5 gr up to 19.0 gr., finding that the smallest groups were in the neighborhood of 16 grains.  Below or above that, the groups opened up to 4 inches.

See if you can get some of the LEE 340s and 405s to try too.
A friend gave me some 300s to try (commercial cast) and they shot OK for plinking for me, and I would use them again, but the 340s on up really shine.

GCrank1,

Eventually I will try other bullets, but deer season has already opened here for bow which will be followed almost immediately by Muzzle loader and then regular rifle.  My available time now to go to the range is extremely limited, so for now I will stick to what I have.  and yes, I will try with your suggestions but way out in time.  I think that the last hunting day is January 5.
