John,

Try accurate reloading , com for good info on drillings, double rifles, & african hunting.

I used to go on a alaskan forum but I'll half to see if I can find it again. This old-timers disease is getting worse I think.

alaska outdoors . Com is the Alaska forum.

DM,

I posted a photo of the muzzels on the Sabati. I have looked them over as carefully as I can, but cannot see any indication of the the rifling being ground. Have a look and let me know what you think. Perhaps this one hasn't qualified for that treatment yet.

John

  John,

  Here's a quote from you

Quote
Any idea what the problems have been. I am curious of all the rifles suffer from the same issues. As mentioned, for the first 100 or so rounds my was great. Now it is consistent in shot placement, but the barrels shoot about six inches apart latterally and 8 inches vertically at 50 yards. Each barrel shoots about a two inch group individually, but nowhere togather.

All i can say is, it's ANOTHER case of poor QT on Sabbati!  Had they caught your poor regulation, they WOULD HAVE GROUND ON THE MUZZLES, but they didn't, so you are stuck with a poor shooting rifle!

I would NOT buy a DR that isn't regulated "properly", and grinding on the muzzles is NOT the "proper" way to regulate a DR.

If it was mine, it would go back to Cabela's, and i'd be spending my money of a higher quality DR.

Bryro,

The rifle I took to Africa is chambered for 416 Rigby, not 426. My fingers get in the way when I type!!

Byron, DM and Doug,

Thanks for the info on the Sabati's. I checked other sites and have found a mixed review. Some folks love em' some hate em'. I guess that is what makes horse races.

It'll be just coming back from Oz at this time next year. It's been there before with the owner of Luxus Walnut and did a nimber on a Buffalo. Now it's my turn!

The next trip will be to Africa fo another buff sometime in the future.

I have several doubles and some of my shooting buddies up here like to get together just to shoot them. FYI htese are all rifles... No shotguns. The biggest is a 4 bore and the smallest is a 300 H&H.

Mike,

Thanks for the post and the photos. What a line up!! I don't know exactly what it is about a double rifle, but they are an absolute pleasure to shoot.

Are you reloading for your 450?

I load for all of them. LOL, Finding factory fodder around here isn't easy and shipping it in is $pendy.. Besides it's fun to 'roll my own'.

The 500/450 likes 102 grns of IMR 4831
The 450 NE's like 96 grns of it too.

Since the 577/500 is a BPE rifle and damascus it gets 66 grns with 15 grns of teddy bear stuffing. (My wife thinks her bear is on a diet..)

For full nitro loads,no need to experiment with TrailBoss when other recipes work so well.
 BUT I am in the process of trying it in a 500/450 WR #1 Carbine (1 9/16")round. It's similar to a 45-75.
But no final decision has been made.

Hello again AKMike,

Been gone a while. Regarding the Tail Boss loads, they are not for full "nitro" power loads. They are intended for greatly reduced loads and are an absolute blast to shoot. Perhaps too much fun.  For full house/"nitro" loads, I use IMR 4831, Reloader 22, or Reloader 25.

If I want a plinking load I'll use the "75% rule". That's a full hou load of powder that your rifle likes and a bullet that's about 75% of the regulated weight. Got the 450's that about a 480-500 grn bullet. 75% of that it 350 grn. I use Hornady 350 rn. for my plinking loads.
I seriously doubt that Trailboss will regulate in a DR.
I do load Trailboss in a tiny 500/450 1 9/16" Westley Richards sidelever. It works faily well there. But nothing fantastic yet.
