best slugs for 20gauge Mossberg 500?
« on: August 29, 2011, 08:36:30 AM »
Just picked up a 500 with the 24" ported slug barrel.
What have other 500 owners found to be the most accurate slugs to use?

Obviously each gun is different- just looking for what has worked in other 500s to get pointed in the right direction.

I don't really use slugs much, but Accupoints and Copper solids from Remington work good.  I also find that the cheapo remingtons, rifled slugs, still worked good to 50 or 75 yards, although POI changed about 4" up and 6" left.  I've only shot a few of each though, so maybe some more avid slug users will chime in.  I picked up some Magtech brass and intend to load my own buck this year and try some round ball slugs to see how they do.  ;)

Is it rifled or smooth bore? My Mossy 500 slug gun was rifled and shot rem. copper solids very well. The best advice I ever got regarding slug guns was to buy a bunch of different sabots and shoot for group size before you ever start sighting it in.

Mine is rifled.  Don't think they make a 20ga. smoothbore on the 500, but I could be wrong.  ;)

Gun came with both barrels, a smooth fiels barrel and a rifled slug barrel.

Don't expect that if slug x worked well for someone else then it will automatically work in this gun, but if 9 out of 10 people had success with slug y than thats the one I'm going to start with.
Will be a deer gun for shooting 50-100 yards.  Thanks again, Matt.

Yep, was referring to the slug barrel being smooth.  The ported slug barrels were all rifled, to the best of my knowledge.  I have the combo also.  ;)

Having a hard time getting the rifled barrel to fit onto the gun.  The field barrel will attach/detach no problem but when I try to put the rifled barrel on it doesn't fit onto the receiver, almost like it's too big.  Anyone else have this problem?

At work now but they look identical- I looked them over pretty well. Using calipers to measure them it looks like the rifled barrel is appr .019 larget tgan the field barrel.

did you have the slide all the way back? Then wiggle it a little.

Open, closed and every spot in between- wiggled and pushed but nothing. The other barrel attaches no problem.

I can't speak to the barrel fitment issue but my son's 20 gauge mossy really likes the 3" Federal Barnes tipped Expanders P209XT1 as does my Savage 220.   They print around 2" at 100 yards from his gun and about half that from the fixed barrel of the Savage.  With that said, my gunsmith tried them in his Savage and they wouldn't hold 6" which just shows that there is usually no substitute for buying a box of everything you can get your hands on and letting the slug rifle tell you what it likes.

You'll want to make sure the barrel nut is good and tight to keep the barrel from moving while firing.

Good luck

Lance

My slug barrel is a little tighter also.  I find that if I put it in at 90 degrees left then rotate it down and into position then secure the screw, it's no problem.  The smooth bore ribbed barrel drops straight on.

There is definitely something wrong with the fit, Mossberg is sending a shipping label to send the gun back to them.  I'm a little torqued that a brand new gun is having issues but someone has to get the 1 in a 1000 that slips through qc.  Mossberg cs was very friendly, asked a few basic questions and then offered the paid shipping label to return the gun.  Will post the results when I get it back.

Gott the Mossberg back today and couldn't be happier.

Picked up a couple different brands/types of slugs from the local sporting goods store and ran out to the range after work.  The sabots definitely shot better than the rifled slugs (meant for smooth bores) but all shot in about a 2-3" group at 50 yards.  For the first time shooting the gun that isn't too shabby.  Will do some more testing for sure but for  cheap switch barrel I'm very satisfied.

If you get a chance try the buckhammers too.  Tried those and they are 1/2 or less the price of most of the sabot's and I got a 2" group ironsighted with my 500.  ;)

+1 on the buck hammers. It's not a mossy but my sons 20ga ultra slug will clover leaf them at 75 yards and they absolutely devastating on deer.
