I know its only a 7.62x39, but I don't need long reach. Anybody handled one or shot one? I can't find any around here.

Dont under estimate the 7.62x39, its a good cartridge within its means. This is also the round that took my very first buck years ago.
 While I dont have any hands on with this rifle in question, I do with a 16.5" barreled SKS set up scout style. And it was truely a handy rifle that I enjoyed shooting.. Didnt take me long to see Cooper's point on the scout setup.

I think that gun would be a nice hunting set up with out much recoil. I had looked into one some time ago in the Remington 799 but ended up picking up a S&W M&P 9c instead. For the price of ammo you can get a good 1000 rounds in some soft point and be good enough for hunting anything with-in 100yds.
 
Better yet, would be fun to reload for if you were set up for it. I say go for it, if i had the spare cash now i would love the Savage, back then it wasn't chambered for it.
