New 17 HMR barrel
« on: January 05, 2004, 11:25:15 PM »
My new 17 HMR barrel came yesterday and last night I got it all dressed.  I also bought a couple of different  brands of ammo for it and now am ready to try it out.  Only problem is that it got cold here yesterday and now I am looking at -7 with a 30 mph wind.  Not the best for good shooting.

Now to my question.  What shells seem to work the best in these barrels (factory Super 14).  I have a box of CCI and a box of Remington.  I plan to use this for light varmints and other small game.

Thanks

Had mine about as long as they been available, but have not used anything except the Hornady loading.  They shoot sooo good I didn't go looking for another round.  This is definately a FUN barrel.  Enjoy!, Walt

I have been joyfully blasting little things for about a year and a half with mine and without doubt ( for me)  the Hornady Varmint express has been the best. I can just about always do the three under a dime trick at 100 yards. My Father-in-Law has the same set up and has had the same results. By the way I have tried all the others when everyone started loading the 17, in most cases groups went south.

Hornady has been the best for me also. Although the Remington and CCI were very close behind.  KN

I am like Hopalong, the Hornadys shoot so good I have not tried any of the other.  From what I have read some will shoot one better than the others and some will shoot all about the same.

Thanks, guys.  I got myself a cleaning rod today and can clean the bore.  I hear the weather is getting warmer by the weekend, so I can start breaking things in.  After a couple hundred shots I can start really trying to see what works best.  I am going to be in a sport shop tomorrow that has Hornady and will pick up some of them.

Again, thanks.
