Did some more shooting today.
« on: September 24, 2011, 01:25:29 PM »
I took one rifle and my two Ruger single actions up to my range today for some shooting.

I shot my Lipsey's Bisley .44 Special 5.5" with two loads. One was a HSM factory load with cast 200 RNFP and the other was also an HSM load but with a 240 JHP. I didn't chrono them so am not sure how fast either was moving. Both shot pretty well for no better than I see the sights these days. I shot about 30 rounds I believe in this gun and now have it hitting pretty much where I'm aiming with the 240 JHP. The cast 200 hits way low in relation to the 240s.

I also shot ten rounds thru my Blackhawk .45 Colt. I'm not sure what the load was as I need to do some searching thru my reloading log to determine. All I know for sure is the bullet is a JHP either a Hornady XTP or Nosler and I need to compare them to be sure which. I know the powder was 2400 due to the typical residue it leaves. Just how much of it is what I need to know cuz it shot real well.

My best group of the day was five shots at 25 yards in 2.9" with four of them in 1.75". I really don't think I can do much better if any better with irons anymore. Who knows tho if I keep shooting it might come back to me.

;)  Hey, what a lucky guy....his own range...no excuse for not shooting a bit everyday is there????  Usually, I try to shoot a bit each day, and for sure each week...sometimes I get involved in hunting and don't shoot due to scaring game...last nite I saw a big fat coyote looking for mice, but passed because I was hunting elk..should have shot because we saw no elk.....love shooting mud balls, rocks, and plastic water jugs with my pistols.....

Thats some pretty good shooting, GB; 1" per 10yds of distance equates to 2.5"/25, so you are in the park. I know I would like to do better myself, but it is tough, and thats decent.

That kind of shooting amounts to minute of self defence or minute of hunting in anyones book. We may be losing our young eyes, but years of experience and practice sure help.

Does not sound like it really left you!...Did you have the 1.25 glasses on? What were your impressions if so.

Yeah I think I had the +1.25 glasses on when I shot the best group and for sure when shooting most of them but I did experiment around a little. I got a clear pair and a sunglasses pair. I gave both a try and did some shooting with bare eyes.

The +1.25 clears up the front sight nicely for me but blurrs the target a bit more than I like. These days I do my best shooting using an aperture of some sort. I have a few different options for that I need to break out again as I've not used them lately.

That is a very good group.

I wish I could spend more time shooting my Blackhawk.

I brought it to the range last week but ended up spending all my time with the AR.

I don't spend any time with my ARs really tho Matt does some times.

I prepped a bunch of fired .45 Colt brass this morning by sizing and deriming and then belled the mouths. I'd guess about 150 or so cases. I have them ready to load now and I have to decide what load I'm gonna try.

I don't recall what I last fired these cases in prolly either a Uberti SAA clone or a Rossi lever action M92. Whatever it was those were the most difficult cases to size I've ever run thru a carbide sizer. They sure must have been oversized badly. I also did those I've fired so far in my Ruger BH and they sized easy as expected so I shouldn't have the difficulty again.
