Which caliber barrel easiest to sell?
« on: September 19, 2011, 01:37:48 PM »
I am trying to put together a 357 maximum project and don't want to pay for a compete custom.  I figure the cheapest way to build one on an sb-2 receiver is to buy a complete gun, sell the barrel, and send it in to be re-barreled in .357.  I want to be able to sell the original barrel quickly, so which caliber should I buy.  I found a new .223 for cheap but don't know if it is a desirable caliber.  Any input would be appreciated.  Thanks, Sam

Probably 30-30 or 45-70.  Just my guess.

Welcome! Browse the H&R Classifieds, you'll readily see what sells quickly, we don't delete listings after they sell,  they're there for future reference.  ;)

Here's an idea... go buy a 357 mag Handi and ream it to Maxi. ;)  The maxi is fine on an SB1 frame.

sambo1022 - Spanky has the best idea.  It saves you the trouble of buying and selling.  If I remember correctly :-[ , the 357Mag Handi sells for about $240?

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

Also the .45 Colt since they don't make this one any more...

A known custom gun builder advised me that the sb-2 is a better choice for safety and longevity

And he is correct... But many guys have now done this with the SB1 receivers and the guns are doing just fine...  My first Maxi was a orig factory chambered gun on a 258 Frame. While not truly a SB1 its not as strong as a SB2 either.  Its just another option for you.

Heres an idea. You evedently like guns(or you would not be here) So pick out your #2 wanted caliber and buy it. Then send in for the Magnum barrel. Ream it to fit the round length of your choice. Don't like? get the reamer and ream full length. Dont like that, get a 35 rem reamer and go one more time ;)

Get the 223 and keep it.  Then you have a 357max with a 223 backup barrel.
