.50-70 sharps.
« on: January 09, 2004, 01:18:00 PM »
Well I posted a question about the .50-140 3 1/4" sharps in the BPCR section, and I found that it would not be feasable for me to load this caliber (without buying a brand new press.......I have 3 already and dont need more.)  I had thought about downgrading to the .50-90, but the suggestion was made that the .50-70 would be more than sufficient for my needs.  I intend for this to be a target/fun gun that MAY just see use on New Hampshire Moose, should my ticket get pulled.  I had done the math using Lymans Cast bullet handbook and thought the round would be kind of weak over the longer ranges (say over 100 yards.)  But I went to the Accurate site, and using a ballistic calculator program, I found that the data from accurate would give me 1200 ft/lbs all the way out to 250+ yards with a 550gr Lead bullet   !  Needless to say, this is the kind of preformance Im looking for!  Has anyone used this round on Moose.  I understand the data is intended for modern guns designed for use with Smokeless powder.  This is no problem as the project is a T/C Encore barrel from Virgin Valley.  So can I in fact get this kind of preformance?  How would preformance change if I go with Black Powder?  Thanks in advance.
