Hard Plastic Jerk Baits
« on: January 09, 2004, 01:23:33 PM »
Skipper, I would like to know if you fish jerk baits like the Smithwich Rouge, Bomber Long A, etc.  Here on my home lake (Old Hickory) it seems there is a very narrow window where the water temp has to be in the middle to low fiftys when they will kill a jerk bait. I have hit them and murdered big fish and other days I jerk all day for nought.

If you know something tell me, please.

I have used the new rapala jointed shad raps the same way with great success in channels along side weedlines.  Since they sink they work great I just add a twitch.  I have a selection of smithwicks too but it seems I forget to take the tacklebox with me.  I'll have to make sure to try them too.   I first seen "deadsticking"  on InFisherman its just another pattern and presentation to add to our arsenal of baits.  They even use a splitshot on the bill of the bait to use it  in deeper water too it also makes a floater sink too.                                              BigBill

All I do is let it fall and using small twitches!!!!!

I use them early in the spring.  Seems they work the best then.  I like the Rougues and the Husky Jerks better than the others.  Sometimes in the late fall, I'll go to the deeper running version with the long bill.  Jerk it down and let it set there as long as you can stand it.
