30/06 range report
« on: September 19, 2011, 12:12:54 PM »
Tried out my new 30/06 barrel today. Shotgun patterns. I'm not happy. I tried 150 gr. bullets. Let barrel cool between shots. My old 30/06 barell shot 1inch groups at 100 yds. with one of the loads tried. Barrel has about 30 rounds through it so for. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Factory fitted or 2nd hand?

I did all the accuracy things listed. The barrel is factory fitted and is tight when closed.

AS CW recommended, give it some range time, it will come around asuming it doesn't have a defect like a bad crown which you can check and fix per the FAQs. What 150gr bullets did you try? 20 rounds isn't very many, my 223 Ultra took 80 rounds before it shot under 1½" and that was after I flitzed the bore, some have taken 200 rounds before they settle down, but I think that's an extreme. Other things to check, scope rail mounted well with loctite on the screws, tight rings on a known good scope, the usual suspects.  ;)

Tried Speer and sierra. Both Spitzer and round nose. I may flitz the barrel, forgot about that. Also may move up to 165 gr. bullets.

My 30-06 Shorty (18.5") loves the 165 grn. Speer Spitzers over a medium load of I3031.  Under an inch @ 100  yards.   Another member just posted about a new 44 Mag barrel shooting patterns at first then coming around to him at around 70 shots or so.  Good luck with your rifle.

I have two 30-06 H&Rs, one loves 150gr Fusions which I think are the same as the Speer DeepCurl, both are made the same way(plated basically), ATK owns both companies, and the other likes 200gr Nosler Partitions, so you probably can't go wrong with the 165gr.  ;)

Yup, I shot a lot of rounds today that went into mediocre groups, some were ~3", several were 1½"-2", just a few that were close to or exactly what I was hoping for, under 1", working up in ½gr increments until I find the sweet spot, usually find it before I get flat primers or sticky opening and/or brass.  ;)

Did you run a patch down the bore and inspect it as well as possible for decent looking rifling, etc. I would also try dropping a jacketed bullet in the bore from each end to see if it wants to fall through, and/or slug it with a lead bullet to feel it out for tight & loose spots.
I can understand groups not up to snuff, but 'shotgun' type patterns from a rifle, in my experience, dont just go away with more rounds.
BTW, double checking the scope rail mounting (like screws bottoming out before actually tight) and/or a scope that has 'gone away' sure beats dumping powder and ball downrange for no other reason but frustration practice.

I just found several boxes of Combined Technology bullets  with both Winchester and Nosler on them. They are hollow point and a dark black or gray color. Say they are FALE SAFE bullets with A LUBALOX COATING. I've had them for years. Anyone know anything about them. Good to break in my new barrel. How are they for hunting? How difficult is it to remove the LUBALOX COATING  from the barrel?

Never used them personally, but have read elsewhere, that it's pretty easy to remove.  It's not like using Moly or not as bad anyway.  ;)

I've shot a lot of the 308 Win Supreme ammo with 180gr Failsafes, they were excellent bullets, killed a lot of deer and elk with em in my BLR, they were replaced by the XP3 which is similar to the Barnes MRX. Never had a problem with the Lubalox coating, it's the same coating CT uses on the Nosler Ballistic Silvertips.

Good to hear. I was wondering if they would expand on deer. Seem you have had no problem with expansion.

I only recovered one Failsafe from the spine of a big cow elk, she never got up from her bed! The rest were all pass thrus, not a lot of ruined meat, just dead animals.  ;D

Awesome bullets, just make sure your barrel is very clean before using them. Those Lubalox coated bullets like to be shot through a clean bore.
Just my 2 cents.

O and Tim I was thinking the same thing about the Speer Deep Curl bullets. Awful lot of simularities there....

  Hello XD40SC:

In reference to the failsafe; I have shot a lot of them into paper and they are very accurate in my rifles. I don't hunt much but my son has killed deer with them in a 300 WBY in a Mod.70 classic, with a very lite 26" bbl. they heat up fast so care was used not to overheat it. They would touch or almost touch @ 100yds. (2 shots only) They are deadly on deer and are suposed to hold together, We dont know because they have all shot through and none have been recovered.
Loaded HOT... Also, The 06 shoots them good also with a good load of 4350. They have a vel range rated on the box. I bought a lot of them in 1997, haven't bought any since.  Good Shooting

Is there any chance the scope mount is loose or you have a bad scope?  I had that problem on an '06 bolt gun many years ago and it turns out the cheap scope was beat to death from hot '06 loads.
