Hornady 55 gr. soft points for a 223 Rem.??
« on: October 09, 2011, 10:02:26 AM »
I have a Remington model 700 BDL 223 Rem.  My parents bought it "new" for me when I was 15 (1989).  It has a 24" barrel with 1 in 12 twist.  I have a Leupold two piece base with mediun rings that have been lapped, a Leupold VX-II 4-12x40mm AO Scope.  It's been glass bedded, the barrel is free floated and I adjusted the trigger pull.

I used to shoot Remington 55 gr. Hollow Point Core-Lokts then they became hard to find and expensive so I tried Winchester USA White box 45 gr. Hollow Points.  Both these rounds were very accurate, sub MOA.  However I couldn't find either of them locally last week so I bought a box of THESE Hornady 55 gr. SP, box of 50.  It says on the box "223 REM 55 gr. SP BRASS TRAINING".  They shoot pretty well in my rifle, right around MOA.  I read some of the reviews on Midways page, the comments are very good.  They look just like a regular soft point bullets, with some lead exposed at the tip.

Hornady doesn't have them listed on their web site.  I think I found the bullets listed though.  It says-
*Streamlined design for ultra flat trajectories.
*Match grade jacket design provides maximum accuracy at all ranges.
*Explosive expansion, even at low velocities.

Would these bullets be good for woodchucks, crow, fox, coyotes and such?

Thanks, NYH1!  ;)

;)  NY, I seldom use factory ammo, but have shot thousands of 55 grain Horn. soft point bullets though my .222's, 223's and bigger center fire .22's..it has always been accurate, and explosive for me...if the bullets have lead exposed, I would have no problem using them for varmits.....it has been one of my go to bullets for more years than I care to remember.... ???

No experience with factory ammo here either, been loading my own for over 5 decades.   But same as WCH, I have loaded and shot a truckload of Hornady 50 & 55gr SP's & SPSX's over the years (and their V-Max's).   The SP's are better for fur you want to keep than the SPSX's as they are more explosive  and better left for use on varmints.

My last two 223 Remy 700 rifles... a 700VS with 2 oz target trigger and Leupold 6.5-20 LR target scope would shoot the SP/SPSX's OK, but preferred the Speer 50 TNT's for long range precision on both predators and varmints (same as my custom 223 XP-100 did).   But my 78 Sportsman "truck/walking" rig wearing an old Weaver 3-9 was always shot with Hornady 50/55gr SP's & SPSX's (which depending on whether for predators or varmints), and it shot them very well.    Have had a boat load of other 22 caliber rigs (including wildcats) that also shot the SP/SPSX's well.   So IMO even though they are a cheap bullet they do get the job done quite well for standard hunting.    For crows I'd prefer a lighter bullet though - if from Hornady either their 35gr NTX or V-Max.
FWIW

I don't shoot factory ammo either but have loaded some 50 and 55 gr. Hornady bullets for my .223s. They were terrible in one rifle but so was everything else. They did pretty good in the rifle that replaced that one and in another. They are OK in my new AR but that's all. All that said I've had better results with Sierra bullets in all three.

I don't hand load so factory ammo is what I have to use.  I've never seen these before and them saying "training" made me wonder if they'd work on the game I mentioned.  My 10 year old son loves punching paper with this rifle at the range.  I want to be able to hunt with it too.  The Remington 55 gr. Hollow Point Power-Lokt's (not Hollow Point Core-Lokt's as I mentioned) were absolutely devastating on small critters.  I never shot anything with the Winchester USA White box 45 gr. Hollow Points.  I'm hoping these Hornady 55 gr. Soft Points work pretty well too.  We're going to try to call in some coyotes this year.

Thanks, NYH1!  ;)
