Help on 308 survivor load

I've been using varget per Lymans 45.7 gr with a 168 gr nosler balistic tip. The bullet is sitting at .020" out of the lands per the guage (hornaday). I'm getting about 2" - 2 1/2"
at 100 yds. My 223 shoots 1".
 
 I have worked the 308 trigger to 2 lbs and fire lapped the barrel. My 223 will shoot 1" at 100 yds. Please help!

That's a near max load, back off on the powder and work up in ½gr increments from the start, Nosler 6th starts at 42gr, 44gr is most accurate and 46gr is max @ 2.810" COL, you'll find the sweet spot, Varget shoots excellent in my 308 bull barrel H&R.  ;)

The .223 is a light recoiling round, that .308 is not. Can you shoot 1" groups regularly with any other .308? Maybe you can, but I just gotta ask.........

I found best accuracy at 43.5 gr. Varget.  Back off a bit and work up.  Varget yields excellent groups with this rifle...

Have you tried other bullets and powders?  I have seen more then one 30 cal barrel that did not like boat tail bullets...

As I already replied to gcrank, my shooting is suspect, but probably a little better than average. I have the handi shooting basics tatooed on my arm. I did shoot a pig through the head last year at 100 paces with this gun using, of all things, Monarch ammo. Better lucky than good?
 
I have tried several types of store bought ammo. The best by far was Nosler Custom loaded with 135 gr ballistic tip. They claimed 3100 fps on that snazzy box of theirs. That round blew a hole through a hog at sixty yards you could damn near see daylight through. I am following a thread on another site that relates the experience of a gunner that leads him to the conclusion that his H&R 308 likes lighter bullets and lower pressures. I note that the lower pressure abvice also comes from several here.
 
I have tried 168gn MK with IMR 3031(?). Not too geat. Tried the same propellant with the Noslers. I was not impressed.
 
The seating depth seams really long. In fact I have nick-named this rifle "Deep Throat". One of you recommended a SAAMI spec COL. That leaves a helluva jump to the lands. It occured to me that the barrel might be out of spec. Any word out their on this matter?

Your creds sure sound good enough.......so we can pretty much rule that out (Im always the most suspect, weakest link in this accuracy chain).
Try more conventional bullets and 7/8ths loads, and rest a bit more forward on the rest. I dont do well that far back as the leverage/fulcrum effect tends to steer the back of the gun (me) around too much and the groups show it.

Something else if your building a hunting load... I do not know of a single manufacturer making a 168 grain hunting bullet. This weight is reserved for match bullets in certain disciplines, like PALMA matches with its 155G...
 
Try some 165's these are generally hunting bullets.

Ther 165 Nosler BT can be fragile at top velocity but overall its a good deer bullet! You could do allot worse!

Hornady Interlock 165gr. BTSP or the 180gr. for tougher beasts.  Better weight consistency in my findings and alot less expensive typically.  ;)

Thanks to all who chipped in on this problem!
 
The 43.5 grains of Varget and the SAAMI spec bullet seating of the 165 gr Nosler ballistic tip is a, if not the, hot set-up. It resulted in a three shot group with two rounds touching and the third 1 1/4" away. I'm thinking of working on the seating next to see it this rig can get better yet. Your thoughts?

I didn't see this mentioned yet, but what brand of brass are you using? And are you FLS or NS your brass?
Handi's are prone to the 3rd flyer from most I have had. Sounds like your on your way though..

That group was Nosler brass, once fired, neck sized.

Full length size your brass and bump the shoulder back just a little at a time until the handi locks with no resistance from the cartridge.  Consistent lock up is the key to consistent accuracy.

Bobby and Aaron make good points, you'll not likely get great accuracy neck sizing, there's too much action flex in the Handi frame to allow it to work well with anything above mid level loads with high pressure chamberings like the 30-06 family of cartridges, if you can't chamber the brass so you can place a straight edge level across the barrel face, then the brass needs to be full length sized, if it isn't level, the action may not lock up completely and you'll get poor accuracy and maybe even pop opens. I size my brass just enough so it's flush with the barrel face using a straight edge, not just visual, if the straight edge has any rock to it, the shoulder needs to be pushed back a little more.
