I did not embarrass the board

This morning was the monthly South African Miniature Cannon Club  here in Durban. Your moderator was invited to shoot. 

The guns are fired at 25 meters. The guns have no sights. 



The gun is aimed by aligning the intersection of the  arc of the breech ring at 12 o'clock with the arc of the muzzle and the target, in this gun  at 6 o'clock on the bull. For windage the two arcs are aligned at the trunion with the target



The shot in the white was from not settling the gun on the platform.  The low hit came from excessive down correction.



Scoring is best five shots, and this target was the second high score of the day. 

Not bad for having never used this aiming technique before. Your moderator brought you no shame!

Well it looks like I will be getting a cannon soon....

Well done Douglas-Most impressive. I have nearly finished my cannon looks to be about the same size.What is the bore of those guns and how and with what did you load them?

OK, I believe that you're just warming up.

I predict that within a year, perhaps when you get back state-side, that you'll be using your new 'match quality' 1" bore cannon on woodchucks or ground squirrels!

PS Those are interesting wheels.I'll lay odds that I know why the insides of the fellows was not curved and why what seems to be an anachronistic hub design was selected. I have found that building such a carriage is not easy.

I did Santa Dave, the one and only time I played golf.

It was for a college course.

I hit the ball, slipped on the wet grass and fell on my butt.

 The ball when about 100 yards, bounced off a tree, came back and landed within 2 feet of where it started.

This was in full view of the tee-off area for hole number 1.

The unintended result was extreme embarasment as there were a good 50 people standing there watching this happen.

I don't golf.

when I saw your first picture I thought it was a full sized cannon.  Very impressive cannon and more impressive shooting.

I gotta admit that picture looking done the barrel came out kinda neat.  I was looking at the  lcd of the digital camera in bright sunlight trying to show the basic alighment of breech and muzzle rings against the target and got this picture. Luck, pure luck

When I looked at the first pictue, I also thought this was a full sized cannon.  Guess that's because THERE WAS NO MTY POWDER CAN TO SHOW SCALE....
Nice pictures DD.  Target looks almost like you were using wad cutters!

Bob,

A powder can on a South African range?  They issue you the powder in pre weighed tubes.  The shot was round ball.  This gun is 45 cal.

I know it isn't a big gun. But since the government regulates everything down here they are lucky to have this.

It's a cannon and I got to shoot it!!

I've being surfing the net trying to find a club in SA for miniature cannons without any success. This thread is the only link to this hobby/sport I could find on the web mentioning South Africa

Please point me in the right direction with regard to contacts or clubs I can get in to contact with.

I'm in the process of building a .177 cal cannon, the next will be a .45 cal.

There are folks from SA that haunt the board - they (and DD) will point you in the direction of the organizations and people they know.

Pieter where in SA are you?

As mentioned in the first post in this thread, there is a Cannon club in  Durban.  They were shooting the first Sunday of every month at the SAPREF range.  The SAREF range has now closed and I believe they are now shooting at the Corobrick range. 

If you are near Durban, I can put you in contact with the club there, just drop me a PM.
