500 S&W loads
« on: September 12, 2011, 05:08:21 PM »
I am looking for load info for 2400 in a 500 S&W. I found some for Blue Dot and a 490 gr bullet, so I substituted a 440 gr and it worked very well. 20 gr of Blue Dot and a rifle primer produced a 2 1/2 group at 75 yards and was a bit more zippy than my plinker load of 14 gr of Unique, even though the Unique was more accurate (1.6") The Blue Dot burned completely, it was the cleanest load using Blue Dot I have ever fired. If I do not find additional data the Blue Dot load will be my deer load for this fall, my best guess is around 1300 fps (no chronograph) from what data I have read. That is plenty for deer/ black bear/ and hogs.

Are there any rifles made in the 500 S&W caliber? It should be up there with the 50-70 Springfield a powerful big game Ctg. fo the past.

Yes, I am shooting it in a rifle, a NEF handi rifle with a 22" barrel. It is a very easy gun to cast for and load for. Many of the guys want to max it out, but I prefer a more laid back approach. I started using 50/70 data because there was not much data available in "reduced loads", there was plenty if you wanted to get a 350 gr jacketed bullet to around 2000 fps. I want my shoulder to remain connected for retirement. The NEF is inexpensive, durable, and is legal for "primitive hunts" like muzzle loaders in many states. Factory ammo is outrageous but my reloads run about the same cost as 22 magnum ammo.

Not really sure what you are asking for.

If 2400 powder for 350gr bullets?

Speer #14 Manual lists:

350gr bullet/ S&W 500mag X frame with 8.875 in barrel / Starline Brass / Fed 215 Magnum Rifle Primers.

Starting Charge:   38.0gr    MV: 1565 fps
Maximum Charge: 42.0gr     MV: 1642 fps

Hope this helps.

Personally I load Lil Gun and Win 296 / H110 powders in my 500 S&W
