PB lead bullets - 45LC & 454 Casull load request..
« on: November 17, 2011, 11:39:17 AM »
My .454 20" handi BC carbine barrel slugs .453+, so I need at least .454 lead.  I have a few hundred 250gr NON-gas check lead bullets.  I have 45LC & 454 Casull brass.  I only have 2400 pistol powder so far.

Want to reload these but concerned that optimum 2400 loads will be too fast and lead the barrel.  Most 2400 load data is for jacketed.

Looking for options or I guess I gotta get another powder.

On the off chance that I can... would 4198 work in .454 Casull, because it's good in the 45-70 with lead.  Never seen any load data for .454.

Note, Lyman load data starts around 40% of BP load with a dacron fluff over powder filler.  How might I apply this to the .454 w/lead bullets if viable?

Thanks...

Somewhere out there should be some load data for a 250 gr lead bullet and 2400.  I'm not much help on this one, I'm using 270 gr hardcast bullets with 2400 in the BC and getting along great.  I also load unique with the 270's for a nice, mild load.  Both loads are ok for my Blackhawk as far as my research has shown.  I was just looking at some hotter loads for the BC, don't really know why and probably won't load any but I found a site specializing loads for lever guns and they are quite hot!  He says they are safe in modern lever actions but I'd hate to get one in the old Blackhawk!

My son's 45 Colt Handi likes 250 grain lead bullets over 2400. Standard pressure data was the most accurate and didn't lead the barrel. It did start to lead the barrel once I got into the Ruger-T/C data. His gun likes 15.0 grains of 2400 with the 250 lead bullet. It burned a little bit dirty at that level but no worse than Unique powder. 15.4 grains of 2400 under a 250 lead bullet is listed as max standard pressure in the book I have.

2400 won't cause any leading problems you might run into, bullet fit and lube are the main culprits in leading.
Using handgun data in your rifle you'll get about 250 fps more from your rifle than a revolver. H110 jumps up about 300 fps, unique only gave me about 150 fps increase.
Another powder that will serve well with cast bullets is aa 5744.

alot of it will depend on what alloy there made from. If its ww id keep it down to under 1400 fps and for that out of your rifle 2400 would be about ideal for a powder. If your looking for full power 454 loads you should seriously look to a gas checked bullet and 110.

Dude,You're in luck!
Your mention of using 4198 is the way to go! Been there, done that...a lot!
I have done plenty of experiementation on this subject.
Using 4198 is fine (very fine) as long as you don't mind the change in power...lower.
Otherwise the performance is excellent!
In either the 45 Colt case or the 454 you always Fill the case to mild compression...always.
I only size my cases down to where the heel of the bullet will be, leaving the rest of the case un-sized. This leaves a little more room for the powder.

Find your charge thus:
Using a fired but un-sized case, fill the case with powder to where the bullet will sit on the powder at the correct seating depth.
Weigh the resulting charge. Thats your powder charge.
If you're going to size the case just to where the bullet heel will be, add 0.1gr or 0.2 gr. of powder (so it'll be lightly compressed when the bullet is seated.)
If you size the whole case it won't hurt anything, you just have a little less powder/power to use.

Example: 230gr Gold Dot, lightly compressed-full case of 4198 gave 920 to 950 fps from a 5.5" revolver and gave 1400 fps [with very small variation]  from a 20" carbine and very fine [surgical] accuracy for the 80 yds tested.
When tested with plain-base bullets up to 280gr it gave similar results.
Lots of un-burnt powder from the revolver but excellent performance otherwise.
The carbine was excellent in every way...just not up to "full power" potential.
Several deer have been unable to demonstrate any discrepencies in performance on their end of the experiment.

BTW, if you fire-lap your bore you'll get less lead in it...no matter what.
Beyond that, its mostly about bullet fit and lubricant as mentioned elsewhere.
Hope this helps.
