Help: How to mount a scope base on a Marlin 782?
« on: October 27, 2011, 05:02:51 AM »

Dear Guys,

I am strongly considering getting a Marlin 782 bolt action for varmint hunting.  This rifle comes with a groove milled into the receiver for mounting a scope.

Problem is, I want to mount a high quality scope with a one inch tube, and for that I need to have the rifle drilled and tapped, and install a scope base on it.

I can't find any catalogue where scope bases are sold for this rifle.  Can anyone give me any advice about how to get a base for this?  Weaver, Leupold, Burris, I am fine with any of them.

Best Regards,
Mannyrock

Have you looked for 1" rings to fit a grooved receiver?  I have a 1" scope on my Winchester 22. Went to the local gun shop and bought a set of rings to fit the grooves. No drilling or tapping involved. Just slide them in the grooves.

Thanks Bobg,  but I really like base mounts, especially for a rifle that I will be climbing in and out of tree stands with.

I'm pretty sure no one makes a screw-on base specifically for this rifle.

Your best bet would be to try to find one that matches the receiver contour reasonably close and have a gunsmith final fit it.

The base that fits the Rossi .22 single shots (has the same hole spacing as the mount for the T/C Contender) may be a fairly close match.  I believe the Weaver base number for the T/C is 92A - but I'm not positive without looking it up.

Dear Guys,

Thanks for the advice.  I have now found that the Marlin model 882, 982, and .22 mag XTM were just upgrades of the 782, using the same action.  They all came drilled and tapped for scope mounts, and Weaver makes bases for them.  So, I think these Weaver bases would be the way to go.

Thanks, Mannyrock
