Well this guy out west of me...
« on: September 29, 2011, 05:09:39 PM »
...has had a Buff classic on sale for awhile.  Yesterday he lowered the price.  I mean he "REALLY" lowered the price!  No true handiholic will have to wonder where it is now.

Not as bulky or barrel heavy as I thought it would be.  At least I already got reloading stuff for it.

Anyone know about Winchester 300g ballistic silvertips?  Came with a box of them.  Look like 'small' rifle primers though.?.?

Be Well...

Congrats, I love mine.  8)  I haven't tried the winchesters, although, couple people I know who've tried them said they are about like the Hornady FTX for expansion.  I had great luck with the FTX for accuracy, but they were pretty explosive.  I used Hornady 300gr. HP Interlocks last year and had a lot of devastation also.  I've now switched over to 350gr. FP bullets for hunting.  The 300gr. were super accurate and I had several cloverleafs with iron sights at 100 yards with those.  FTX were nearly as accurate.  The bigger 350's seem pretty good too although I haven't had super stellar groups.  With 48gr. Reloader7, they definitely have a felt recoil.  ;)

I used the 168 gr. ballistic silvertips for years in my .308 at higher velocities than the .45-70 and had zero problems with them.  I killed a lot of deer with that bullet and never found one; every one a complete pass through.  I reload the Win brass now, and they take large rifle primers.  I can't imagine a .45-70 taking a small.

Try 28.0 grains of 2400 behind your 350 grain bullets, it works wonders for me accuracy wise with 350 grain Hornady RNFP's....<><....:)

Unless you're only going to shoot blackpowder or a sub, I wouldn't go bigger than the .45-90 and even that is probably pointless.  IMR-4198 is your friend.

Congrats on the new BC!!  ;) I've got a box of the CT BSTs, but haven't shot any of em yet, Midway has a couple reviews on them and the ammo.

Unfortunately WW doesn't offer their 45-70 bullets to the reloader( at least not in Canada). Any of the others are all HP's same as WW's and I think if you load them down to 1600 fps or so, they will still work well without doing the excessive damage they do at 1800 fps.
What is the point of Life if you can't have fun.

WW doesn't make the CT BST bullets, Nosler does, but it's a moot point, it appears they don't make the .458" 300gr any more at all, I bought mine which are the uncoated version as seconds from Nosler's Shooter's Pro Shop, they're no longer listed on Nosler's site at all, guess it's gone the way of the 300gr Partition.  :-\

Did the simple extractor mod with a little dab of JB weld.  Really makes a difference.  I'm not an extractor fan so this is planned to be a lead bullet target gun.  My 22" ejector is the hunter.

Hoping for some range time tomorrow.

A 405 grain cast bullet work perfectly.  Lee makes a .459 hollow base mold that is awesome.  I can't see a reason to use jacketed bullets in the .45-70 but the Remington 405 works fine too.

Shot it today.  Put 5 Rem 405 factory loads into 2" at 50yds one right after another.  Then they called cease fire and the crowd dispersed.  No one asked me about it though.  Could use some trigger work.

Just primed 30 brass.  Have 4198, Varget & 2400.  Speer 405s and 300 HPs. Not up to lubing any lead tonight.  Decisions... decisions.  Maybe some of each.  This is a really stressful hobby.

Be well...
