I just got some of these in 165 gn. for my .308.  Anyone had any experience with these?  How did they shoot and would you hunt with them?

:eek:  I've used these bullets in my 30.06 for blacktail deer.  In fact that was all I used   when I first started hunting deer.  In front of a dose of 48 grains of IMR 4064 my old rifle will still put three shots at 100 yards into a 1 inch group.  Better on occasion.  

They are very effective killers. Expect the about the same result as using a Nosler ballistic tip in the same weight. :eek:

I went home on leave in Oct and loaded some up for my 15" -06 Encore.  I used 55 grns of W760 with the 165's and shot sub-moa 5 shot groups all day.  3  shots were .5".  This was with a 4x scope so it is possible to do better.  I never got the chance to hunt with them though.

I like the 165 soft point better.  I shot a 140 pound doe last year at a distance of about 30 yards.  I hit her with the HPBT and she kicked and ran right to left 40 feet.  I shot her a second time with the SPBT.  She kicked and ran 50 yards and piled up with in site of me.  After cleaning her up i found 2 entrance holes and 2 exit holes.  I  followed the blood trail back to the second shot.  Blood trail was 3 feet wide and all pink frooth, lung hit, and I found a fist size peice of lung.  from there i followed her tracks to where she was standing for the first shot.  There was no blood between the 2 shots.  There were no trees between us and before i shot the second time she showed no signs of beeing hit, she just looked at me.  I did not recover either bullet, but i think the HPBT went right through with out expanding.  The SPBT hammered her, the 30 yard run was a cartwheel down hill.  She was dead on her feet and did not know it.  The only thing i do not loke about the SPBT is that it is easily deformed if the same bullet is repeatidly rechambered.

I have had excellent results with those bullets even when I didn't make a good shot.  I loaded up a batch for a Rem 788 in 308 and used IMR 4895 if my memory is correct.  I loaded them rather mild but accuracy was excellent.  Usually the 788 shoots near max loads the best but with a light synthetic stock it is much more pleasant to shoot  if I can back off a few grains.   I shot several whitetails and one antelope with most dropping or going only a short distance.  I remember a couple which I made a bad shot but they left good blood trails and were easy to track and  recover.  I am now using 150 gr ballistic tips because I have been doing more antelope hunting and the 150s better match the ballistic plex scope I have on the gun.  If I was hunting  exclusively here in Arkansas in the woods I would still use the game kings.    - good hunting

A friend and I used to hunt caribou together.  He used Sierras BTHP and I used Nosler Partitions or Speer hot core - we both had 300 win mags.  I always felt my bullets worked better even though he shot as accurately or better than I. Seems like we had to trail a few of his animals and/or he required a follow up shot more often than I did though we were shooting similar size animals and usually as very similar distances.  The Noslers weren't as spectacular  as some of the Sierra or Speer kills but they always seemed more certain. I have stayed away from Sierra for shooting game.

I've never introduced one to fur and bone but I can tell you they're accurate somebodies!

Using Reloader (above)'s load, short a half grain of 4064, I shot one of my best 600 yard scores with that bullet out of a Krieger-barreled M1 many years ago. It was only recently that I finally bettered that score!

They'll go where you point 'em! What they do once they get there, I'll have to defer to more experienced fellas.

My dad and myself have used sierra 165 bthp's in 308cal with 39grns of IMR 3031 for the last 20 odd years.  My own experience has been with whitetails in the 120 to 190 pound range.  We have never had a deer go more than75 yds on any shot, most have dropped in their tracks or only took a few steps.  One note:  Never hit any meat area you plan on eating.  Shot a doe through the shoulder quatering toward me, hamburger on the hoof.
I personally started shooting them in the neck about 5 years ago and they never move.  Of the deer shot through the chest, all have left good blood trails.  Lots of internal damage.            Good luck!
