New Factory 35 Whelen Ammo

Here's some good info for all our MS primitive season hunters who shoot a Handi Rifle in .35 Whelen.

Albeit expensive, I bet it can be counted on to perform very well.  If anyone buys some of this and tests it, please let us know how it performs in a Handi Rifle.

PRESS RELEASE FOR BUFFALO BORE 35 WHELEN SUPERCHARGED AMMUNITION

Again, as per customer request, Buffalo Bore has developed two new 35 Whelen loads. Item 42A features a Sierra 225gr. SPTZ-BT bullet @ 2705 fps out of my Remington 700. (24 inch bbl)  At the expected impact velocities, this bullet will mushroom readily, but hold together on large game like bull elk. We recommend this load for use on smallish big game (like whitetail deer) through Yukon Moose and Bison. However, on very tough (other than broadside) angling shots on large big game, we recommend the use of our item 42B, which features a 225gr. Barnes TSX bullet @ 2654 fps out of the same rifle. The TSX load is a bit slower than the Sierra load because the long-for-weight all copper TSX uses up more case/powder capacity than the shorter Sierra bullet of the same weight.

If you desire the deepest possible penetration from an expanding bullet in 35 Whelen, the 225gr. Barnes TSX bullet delivers. It will out penetrate a 250gr. typical premium partition bullet, but gives the advantage of higher velocity, flatter trajectory and reduced recoil of the lighter 225gr. bullet. You can use this TSX load for bad angle (quartering or going straight away) shots on the largest North American big game.

This ammo is designed to be the highest quality, most powerful/versatile, 35 Whelen ammo, in the world. It exhibits sub MOA accuracy in our test rifle.

very nice, Im glad theres  more options for ammo for this classic caliber for those who dont handload, but there is no way im gonna  pay 50 bucks a box plus hazmat  for ammo when I can roll my own.


or shoot a 225 grainer  at 2800+ out of my rifle  too much recoil to much battering of the weapon itself and too much of just darn near everything I dont like about  hot loaded ammo.  I admire their  ability to wring the most possible performance out of a cartridge without exceeding pressure standards  but I dont need it.
I load for my whelen using the same sierra game king  and barnes tsx bullets  loaded to 2500fps  with 9 inches drop at 300 yards using a 200 yard zero pushing to 2800+ might get an 8 inch drop with no appreciable extra killing power. but a horrible increase in pressure, battering and recoil
  a 225 sierra at 2500 will shoot thru broadside on any critter in north america  perhaps  excepting the biggest bears   the barnes  will cover that handily at the same speed and make angled/raking shots thru anything on this continent.


Im glad there's more options but I consider it  a waste of good powder  and a mine is bigger than yours contest for the most part.
 there is not a hunter in mississippi  who needs anything more than the remington green box 200 or 250 grainers, in a factory load.
 I know, I live here and have hunted all over the state and theres nothing here that would need those kind of loadings not even the biggest 600 pound feral hog.
 but sure as hell there will be some folks bragging this fall that their latest greatest super-duper load  is the best thing since sliced bread, human nature I suppose and the people at the ammo companies gotta eat too


meanwhile Ill take any thing in north america  and not beat myself my weapon or my scope to pieces  with a standard 2500 fps loading.

good info, ive been playing with my 35 whelen and the remington core loks shot the best. but i picked up some hornadys and they kill on both ends the remmys shoot 2675 the hornadys shoot 2850!!!! and are pretty painful. think im gonna work up a 2500 fps load with 200gr hornady sp and ftx bullets until i can locate some loose core loks. ill post my results

I got a H&R 35 Whelen last spring.  i was sighting it in. and getting the attached group with 200 G Core Loks.  See the attached .jpg.  I'm going to try some Barnes VOR-TX Ammunition 35 Whelen 180 Grain Tipped Triple-Shock X Bullet. 

Also, out of two boxes of shells i've had ZERO mis fires.  they guy i bought it from said he sent them back for the recall on fixing the hammer spring or something like that.

Has anyone shot the barnes Vor tx?  specifically the 180G in 35 whelen?  If this works out, i plan to hunt all year with my new "Primitive Weapon"!

That's some good shooting! I had an older 35 Whelen barrel that didn't shoot nearly as well and it had FTF issues. I might consider one in the future if I can my hands on one of the older 26" barrels. That 180gr T-TSX should be a quite capable meat-getter.

This sounds like some good ammo, but I question the use of this ammo in a Handi.  Ammo makers keep pushing the envelope and making faster and faster ammo.  I got a new Lyman reloading manual this summer.  Was reading from it earlier this week.  Where they list guns that can be shot with certain loads, they have downgraded the H&R guns.  Case in point, 45-70, they no longer list the 45-70 H&R as being able to shoot the Lever-gun loads.  They say the H&R should be limited to the Trapdoor loads.  Are they just being legally conservative or is there some sound reasoning behind this?  Having seen guns blow up and people sent to the hospital, I am leery of some new products, in old designs.  This new ammo sounds nice, but it's hard to improve on an already good thing.   

I have one of the first .35 Whelens from the 90s, with the longer barrel.  My Dad used it to take an Alaska/Yukon Moose, using factory Remington ammo.  250gr Core-loc bullet, made a complete pass through at 80 yards.  Lungs and Heart were all turned to jelly.  Moose turned around took two steps, then fell.

Using a Custom .35 bolt gun, I shot a Grizzly with ammo from the same box my Dad used.  Bullet hit under the chin, continued back and shattered about 10 inches of spine, for an instant kill.
