Hunting Load for 45 Colt using 250 GR. HDY XTP Bullets
« on: October 03, 2011, 02:49:18 PM »
This coming deer season I again plan on using my EMF Hartford 1892 (Rossi) in 45.  I have some 250 grain Hornady XTP bullets I am thinking about loading.  I also have some HP-38 but am not opposed to buying some different powder.  The full SAAMI load for the standard 45 Colt is 7.3 grains of HP-38.  That is supposed to deliver 797 fps out of a handgun.  I guess it would deliver about 900 feet per second out of a 20 inch barrel.  If I recall the 1892 Rossi is plenty capable of handling higher loads than SAAMI rated loads and can venture up into the 45 Colt range used by blackhawks etc.   I am wondering if anybody has a favorite 45 Colt hunting load.   I would prefer to stick with the SAAMI load since the ammunition might end up in my New Model Vaqueros which are not rated above the SAAMI maximum.
I know, why doesn't he just use his 30-06?  Well I am going to take my 30-06 when I am in a stand, but that thing is heavy when I am still hunting. I hunt in the Missouri woods and my longest shot out of the stand is no more than 50-60 yards.

Been posted quite a few times previously, but I really like the Reloader7 load for my .45 LC Classic carbine.  ;)

For standard pressure I would try 15 grains of 2400.
