Anyone use Retumbo in the 7mm RUM?
« on: September 22, 2011, 03:03:36 PM »
I have a good load in my 7mm RUM using IMR 7828 under the Barnes 140 TTSX. I am going to work up a load with Retumbo and the same bullet for late season cow elk ( read "cold) and I like the Hogdon Extreme Powders for that.
I see Hogdon's data list 96.5 or so as a Max. I am just checking to see your results. I have used Retumbo in a 300 RUM/200gr, but I have found the 7mm RUM to be a bit more finicky in load workup. Just checking if anyone had any problems, etc. I sold my 300 RUM, so after I get a good load made up, I am putting the Leupold 4.5x14 CDC on it, and have a custom turret made up for that load as well. Should be alot of fun anyhow!

Retumbo works great in my 264 Win mag so is should do the same in  your 7 rum.

Thanks Shot1- I am going to load some up today and shoot later.

PS "Later that night"...I can tell this Retumbo is going to work just fine. I was concerned about a compressed charge, what with up to 96.5 gr and the long Barnes 140 TTSX. I don't have a Lee FCD for this round, and didn't use one for the 7828 loading, but had plenty of room. I like to use a FCD with the Barnes x, as I feel it gives it a more consistent "bullet pull", and also keeps the compressed loads from puhing the bullet out, increasing COL. I used a 4" drop tube, and I had powder up to the shoulder with top load. My Hornady dies create alot of neck tension, so I am set. Hopefully, I can get out to the range this pm.

Good Morning

When I had a 7RUM, I tried some retumbo.  It worked but I was never able to get the advertised velocities.  I ended up having a 270 Weatherby built on that action, because the 7 was shot out after about 250 rounds.

Well, I have heard they are barrel burners, so I don't shoot mine very much, ha. Today I got to the range, and was able to work up to Hogdon's Max load of 96.5gr. I have a tight Shilen 26" bbl, and I got 3632 fps av with these Barnes 140 TTSX! Best part, all three went into a 3 shot av. of .65", new RP cases, Fed 215M primers, scope on 9x. I have a single set trigger, so I was able to "finesse" those 3 shots, all from a cold barrel. I shoot this thing very, very slowly, ha.
I also shot my 35 Whelen AI with the new Barnes 200 TTSX ( I have been shooting the old 200X over 58gr/H322/2970fps for over 10yrs) got .69" for 3 shots, 58.5gr/H322/2950 fps , fireformed RP cases and BR-2 primers. Not bad for an old warhorse!

I have a 338/378 Weatherby, very similer to your Ultra Mag, in that it has a large case.  I use IMR-7828.  I tried Retumbo due to the temp extreames we have here in Alaska.  Did not like the loads I got using the Retumbo in Weatherby Cases.  I just was not getting the consistancy with velocity that I was looking for.  Went back to the IMR powder.

I have since found a good use for Retumbo.  I got a 25-06, decided the 110gr Nosler Accubond was my optimal bullet.  Looking through the Nosler Manual for a good powder, that gave good velocity.  Retumbo was the leader of the pack, Highest velocities through out all the powders listed.  Worked up loads using Retumbo for the 25-06 and love the loads.  The velocities and energy produced make 600 and 700 yards shots very doable.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I am loading the 7mm RUM with a 160 gr AB and 93.0 grs Retumbo in a M700 LSS. Accuracy is under MOA and MV is 3318 fps.

just picked up a 100 once fired 7mm ultra mag brass and i dont even have a gun. Its one thats on my short list though and the price was right. I had crap luck with barnes bullets this year shooting deer but did shoot a couple with the 140 accubond nos out of a 7rem mag and it performed real well
