shikari 45/70
« on: October 05, 2011, 02:37:07 PM »
I was at one of my local hangouts today (pawnshop) when a older guy came in and sold a H&R rifle. After the guys finished i asked to see the rifle thinking it was a muzzleloader. After i loooked at the side it said 45 70 govn. I was thinking someone put a barrel on it but it was the factory. I came home and looked it up and found they build these rifles many years ago. It is a1 shape even has a peep sight on it. I know there is a waiting period on them to resale i may buy it if the price is right what do you guys think is a fair price????

Look like this with a peep sight?

This one was made in 1972

If he sold it, is there a waiting period?

243,

They have been selling on the big auction site from under $200 to around $300 depending upon condition.  Never seen one in a candy store so don't know what that market would be.  If original, the gun has a cast iron frame, brazed underlug and should only be shoot with Trapdoor level loads.  And they look cool. 8)

Had one of those long time ago.  Didn't do much shooting with it, but, from what I remember, it was a solid gun.  I like my .45-70 Handi-Rifle much better.  I think in the movie "Southern Comfort" some of the Cajun folks were shooting National Guard soldiers in the head with them, after the troops on manuevers fired blanks at the backwater boys.   :o

These were good looking guns but your money would be better spent on a new 45/70 Handi rifle.

I agree with Stan.  You can't take advantage of the modern .45-70 loads with a Shikari.  If I were into black powder cartridge shooting, it would be a great rifle to own.....but I'm not.  Too old and impatient to deal with the "Goex Mess".

I have had several 45-70 handi rifles.  Down to 2 now.  The Shikari will be the last handi rifle I own that will leave.  Outside of the 7 mm TCU that is.  The old trapdoor loads aren't all that weak anyway.  They will penetrate bambi from stem to stern.
