projectors new toy
« on: October 10, 2011, 07:35:59 AM »
I found this listed on ebay a month or 2 ago listed by a local seller.  I contacted him on it and almost jumped but then held off thinking it wasn't the best timing and they are usually arround.  Then weeks later the he called me needing to sell it and offered me a low-ball price.  One week later and it's proudly sitting in my shop.  It's a South Bend 9" lathe with a 3' bed from the 40's.  It has a newer motor and switch and is on a home-built bench that I plan on replacing with something higher and with organized storage.

The plan is to turn carriage axles and wheels on it, then maybe a barrel.  I used one very little about 25 years ago so I have some learning to do.  I don't have any material so I've only turned an oak dowel and a brass tube, and you fellow machinist have nothing to worry about competition-wise.

what do you think?... and thanks.

Thanks Flagman.  I'm looking forward to using it.  It could use a new belt but otherwise seems dialed in.  It also came with a quick change tool holder, looks handy enough but maybe a bit bulky.

I was suprised how much came with it.  Chucks, bits, collets, cutters, tool holders, burr-ers, boring bit and a lot of things that I don't know what to call.  Can you recomend any books?  thanks.

Any tech schools near you ?  Thier book store would have basic knowledge books for sale .
Other wise , Check Amazon . Com for used text books . I bought a like new book for less than what the shipping was . From a school in Calif.
Old South bend books were good basic instruction.

Here is a link to a pdf for Army Training Circular 9-524, Fundamentals of Machine Tools which I think will be worth your time.

Here is another pdf of a machinery handbook (this time 100 years old) that may be of use.  You may need to be a member of the forum that hosts it.  If so and you don't want to join, I can download and email to you or post on my web site.

My website is gunneyg.info but you will find the home page for lassengunsmithing.com if you go there.  I use it as a place to store stuff I want to be able to reference in the various fora I am a member of, not as a place to let every identity thief to find out as much about me as they can.   :D
