Favorite feral hog/boar load?
« on: January 10, 2004, 02:43:28 PM »
I was wondering what the favorite sixgun or one-gun load for hogs would be ?

I happen to like the 265 grain Hornady 44 caliber bullet with 22 grains of h110 in the 44 magnum. I also like the 45-70 TC with a 300 grain HP.

Anyone care to comment?

I usually use the Winchester Partition Gold load and have used Garretts also.  I have used RBCD .44 mag load and I was a litte worried about it  being a 110grain load @ 2,400 fps and about 1,400 ME.  I shot a hog that weighed close to 200 pounds and he went down hard. A little light for a hog load in my opinion and don't use it anymore.  Works great on exotics and deer though.

With handguns I prefer heavy hard casts with wide meplats. In .44 Mag. from 280 to 325 grains. In .45/.454 from 300-330 grains. In .480/.475 from 400-440 grains. Push them to 1100 fps or more and they do a fine job.

I'm just curious...What would be wrong with using 240gr jacketed soft points in .44mag?  At 40 yards (my max comfort range) I'm shooting thru 5 inch diameter pieces of firewood, I would think it would work on hogs. Please tell if and why I'm wrong?  Thanks

I've been using the 265 Hornadys for years with great results. I used to shoot hard cast but got tired of the leading problems I had with them.

Really depends on shot placement. If you shot them in the head/neck then yup I'd say the 240 JSP is just fine. If however you'll be taking whatever shot is presented I'd go with more bullet. I once shot a big bore between the eyes as he came at me from about 15' with a .44 Mag. 300XTP. It dropped him as it got the brain but the bullet came apart and only penetrated back as far as the ham. I'm sure glad I didn't ask it to penetrate from any other angle. I've now gone to using only heavy hard casts since for revolvers. I'm only interested in penetration not expansion.
