Encore 9"-10" barrel for deer
« on: October 05, 2011, 06:07:35 AM »
I'm thinking of getting a pistol barrel again but I want a shorter barrel, of these 3 calibers what one would work best out to 125 yards or are they pretty much the same?
I'm looking at 6.8 SPC with 110gr Accubonds, 6.5 TCU with 100gr Ballistic tips, or a 30 Herrett with 125gr Ballistic tips.

Thanks,
Ron

They have some minor ballistic differences but all of them should be good for deer hunting at that range.  I would be tempted to pick the Herret because it is a rimmed case.

+1 on the Herrett.  In addition to the rimmed case the Herrett was developed or a 10 inch barrel..  Also, people who know tell me that the 6.8 SPC is virtually a rimless 30 herrett...

The herrett is what I would pick but a 44 mag will work quite nicely as well. The herrett will almost equal a 30-30 rifle if that helps.

I have a 6.5 TCU in 10 inch and use the 100 gr Serria HP with a healthy dose of H4895 OR H335 OR H322 on deer hogs and etc out to 200 yards . This caliber is very accurate with very little recoil with great penetration and bullet expansion. It has been a great gun and one of my mother's favorite calibers before se died as well as one of my favorites. Hope this helps you.
