just bought a winch for the jeep
« on: December 30, 2011, 02:13:31 AM »
Ive procrastinated long enough. Right before this deer season i got stuck going into my blind and had to walk about 5 miles back to camp. With my bad back its was a trek!! I said to myself then never again. I bought a 8000lb warn winch for it today. Hated to spend good gun money on it but im sure one of these days ill be thankful i did. I was in the shop getting my wifes car worked on and the owner whos a freind of mine was talking and said he had one that was once mounted on his truck and never used and would take 300 bucks for it. Hard to pass at that price

Make sure you have a good support bag to go with it.  2 ea. straps, clevises, and snatch blocks to start.  If you're using wire rope a cable arrestor or loose sandbag you can wrap around to guard against broken cable lashing around is a necessity.  Synthetic rope with rock guards is the way to go.

Ive allready got a high lift jack in it. When i was younger i allways had winches on my trucks but back then i need them to offset the stupid factor the beer added to the day. I also understand better then most the need to use a cable arrestor of some sort. I have a friend that was a heavy equit. operator. He was stuck bad in a backhoe one day. this was an old backhoe without a cab. they were winching it out with a truck that had a hydrolic winch. Again an old one without any overload protection. the cable snapped and came back an hit him in the head. he spent over a year in the hospital and has never been the same mentaly since the accident.
