1st Post New 357 Trapper
« on: October 08, 2011, 05:43:35 PM »
Hello all,

My first post here on GBO.  Just picked up my first handi rifle in recent history, havent owned one in many years.  Got a Trapper in 357 and it is the definition of "Handy".  I purchased rifle to be a host for a Thompson Machine ISIS silencer, and I think it is going to work work out great.  Got my inspiration from AAC's 300 Blackout Handi Rifle that is due out soon.  Looks like the press photos of it are of a trapper style rifle.  I just prefer the much cheaper 38/357 for this particular purpose.   It will be doing double duty as a youth pig rifle as well, was hoping to puck up a spare wood stock to cut down for that purpose.

I had only one problem with the rifle in that when I opened up the box the front sight was missing.  I eventually found it and the screw.  The sight had popped off due to the screw being far to short to adequately engage the threading in the barrel.  Any ideas on what thread pitch this might be?  Would I be better off with retapping to a larger size?  Any input is appreciated.  I will be redrilling at some point either way, as I am going to shorten the barrel to 16" when I thread the muzzle and move the front sight back.

Think I will send it in for a shotgun barrel to be fitted as well as a trigger job.  I think the 357 with an accessory 28ga barrel will be a fantastic youth combo.

Lol, that's good!  :)  I would be interested to see how well the can works with full-power Magnum or Maximum loads. ;)

With loads above 1100fps it will be loud.  Ballistic crack is unavoidable, though it will be much easier on the ears.  FYI, I dont think it would handle 357 mags as it is designed for 9mm and similar cartridges.

What were you planning to use on hogs then?

180 JHP's or 200 gr Cast Lead at 1100 fps.  Should do the job on eating size porkers in the 80-150lb range just fine.

So far I like the look of these 200 grainers http://www.pennbullets.com/38/38-caliber.html

These folks also make a 230 grain Thunderhead that looks interesting.

Lots of piggies here in all shapes and sizes.

Maybe I will stick with someone elses bullets.  Cast Performance comes to mind, although if 180 JHP's will expand at that speed I may just go that route.

Thanks for the heads up.

I like Cast Performance Bullets and have had great service from them when I asked about reloading data. If I may make a suggestion, use a cast bullet that has a large meplat. It will make up for expansion everyday. Also, with a bullet fired that slow for game, I would want something cast very hard that will penetrate well, 180gr or the heaviest that will shoot the best.

My thoughts exactly.  I have been hunting with a 300 Whisper for a while, 240 Sierra MK at 1050fps.  Penetration is amazing, but I think the big meplant .357 bullet will kill even better.  Much cheaper to shoot as well.
