375 ruger

i just got a 375 ruger....
it is  a howa 1500....sand colared  hogue stock...stainless 20 inch barrel

no   idea  why.... other than the price was right and i wanted  ''something''  BIG

any advice  on a scope....scope  base?

judging by  the price  and availability  of ammo...reloading will be a must
also with the  price  of slugs.....looks  like  casting for this caliber is in the near future
what   bullet weights  would any one suggest......probly  needs to be gas checked  too??
how  do the cheaper 375 slugs  for lever guns  work??

does any  one do any thing with  these guns other than  admire  the power?

i have  no intentions  of ever going to africa
i  know  my 308 win [howa also]  or the 45-70  will do anything  i need

They are an excellent elk round, I shoot a 270 gr Hornady sp.  They are fairly inexpensive to shoot and perform really well on elk.  I also wouldn't hesitate to take mine deer hunting.  Sure some people might say its overkill, you could eat right to the hole, and "Can you kill anything to dead?"

Okay.  Do you still have it after 9 months?  What do you think of it now?

it is definitely a keeper


went with 2X7 luepold scope


only shot  hornady 300 gr so far
got some blemished 270gr  to reload


also got a 250gr lee mould...to try some cheap and reduced loads
load it like a 35rem on steroids
with its 20 inch barrel shoud be a great bush gun


the 300 solids penetrated 16 stopped in 17  jacksonville fl phone books
they were compressed still in shipping bundles

That is one of my favorite scopes.  My 375 ruger wears a vari-x III 1.5-5x20mm.  I won't be taking mine out for elk season this year,  I have a lonely 350 rem mag that hasn't killed anything yet.

Finally got mine running, sort of.   Made a brake for it.  Recoils less, no copper deposits on the brake.  Still not as loud as my .44 mag. revolver.  Shoots 3+" at 100.  Expected better.  Only shot it 6 times so far. Might be the brake but not sure yet.  Using 270s, moly-coated (at home-tumbler) with mag primer, & starting dose IMR 4350, per Hogdon reloading web page.  I had to reload the new cases with an assortment of dies because the guy on Gunbroker I bought the .375 Ruger dies 2 weeks ago hasn't shipped yet.  Anyways, I didn't resize the new brass but still got enough neck tension to hold the bullets from moving in the magazine from recoil.  No visual runout of the bullet /case.

I'll know better when I get the right dies, & maybe try it with & without the brake.   I'm thinking accuracy would be better if I speeded up the bullet a bit.   Probably getting about 2500 FPS now.  Some rifles like the moly bullets and some don't.  I like breaking in a new barrel with them~kinda avoids copper deposits in the barrel.

I have never tried anything moly.  I like the 270 Hornady's because I can usually get them at a decent price at gun shows, and they shoot one big ragged hole with RL 15 out of my rifle.  They are chronographed right at 2600 fps.

I scrubbed the bore real good, and modified the brake a tad, and that pretty much took care of it with groups now in the 1.25" range at 100.  Where did you get the Rl 15 recipe for the 375 Ruger?

If I remember correctly I went off the Nosler data reduced the powder weight and worked up.

I couldn't find anything on the Alliant page for the .375 Ruger.  I was thinking I could start out with .375 H&H data since the Ruger is slightly larger.  I prefer the powder company data to a guess, however.
