Compact Encore
« on: July 29, 2011, 10:09:16 PM »
Hello,
I have a couple encores already but I've been thinking of building a compact encore for easy carrying and traveling.  I was thinking of doing something with an 18" heavy barrel and a 1"-2" shorter buttstock, and if my calculations are right, the rifle's overall length will be around 32" or so.  Has anyone built something similar that can share their thoughts?  I am worried that the length may be too short and feel awkward when carrying or shooting.  What do you guys think?

Personally,  I would cut the barrel down to 16.5 inches and leave the stock alone.  I am not a big guy but need every inch of an encore stock.
You could try one of the folding after market stocks.
Lastly you could look for a beat up used wooden stock to try shortening,  I wouldn't take off more than 1/2 inch at a time and try the stock for fit.

How do you guys like the handiness of the shorter barrel/rifle?  Do you prefer it over the full length?  I'm on the smaller side and most stocks feel to big for me and I usually feel better with the shortened or youth stocks, but I'll probably do the barrel first and see how it feels before cutting the stock. THanks!

A shorter barrel would depend on what its chambered for, its intended uses and whether the loss will make any difference in the performance you want from it.   As for handiness... back in the Contender days there was considerable difference between the 16.25" and 21" factory barrels if in tight cover, the weight difference was negligible, but again often at the price of a performace loss.   After the early years most of my carbines had custom 20" bull barrels, and that seemed to be a good compromise for handiness and performance with most cartridges on the Contender.   Did have a wispy 18" I bought a Choate folding stock set for to make it the most compact for carry though.   I only shot pistol barrels on all of my Encores.   But since they usually have longer to much longer rifles barrels to start from, getting them as compact would mean even more "cutting" somewhere.

A stock to fit you should be a given IMO and the first priority.   So if it was me, I'd get the stock right for me first, then decide on barrel length FWIW.

As always, Ladobe is dead spot on.  I carry and shoot an 18" 45-70 Katahden barrel and a 20" 12ga turkey barrel w/ 3" chamber and believe me, you want the stock to fit! :)

How about a 16.5" with a folding stock?  I call it my pack rifle!

The only thing I would have done different is the barrel profile.  I went with full bull to reduce felt recoil.  As often as this is shot, I wish I would have gone with sporter.

This one is just that in 6.5X284.  Velocity is around 2600 fps and has taken several deer!

Patrick do you know the overall length of your rifle with the stock folded?

I bet that heavy bbl does a good job of holding down recoil.  Wallacem

I've never measured, but legal length is measured unfolded, if that's why you are asking.

No I'm in Canada here minimum length is taken from the shortest length so folded has to be over 26" to be non-restricted (take in the bush).

I have a 16.5" barreled 22LR T/C Contender carbine set up for my little guy with the shortened butt stock overall length is 26 3/8" another set up is with a 14" 45 Colt carbine barrel with the a standard length of pull butt stock it is 29 1/2" long...

So the reason I asked is that after seeing your short Encore I was thinking of putting together a short Encore as well but I need a overall length of 26"...

Re: Compact Encore ...practice run
« Reply #11 on: October 11, 2011, 10:34:32 AM »
Thinking that a compact would be interesting. I decided on a practice run , for the cost of less than a Encore barrel I purchased a CVA Stainless Stalker. The rifle in original form (first pic)after eight shots produced a 1.25" , three shot group...then I ran out of ammo. Pic two shows rifle after cutting barrel to 18", re-inletting forend and cutting a lightening hole in butt=stock(usless). Pic three shows rifle after replacing 3x9 scope with 1.5x6 scope (stalking in Western Pa. is usually woods), for quick target acquisition requires 1.5x . And raising the cheek piece...now I don't have to search for scope when I throw the gun up. Comb is now right height but butt pad(heel) should be higher...Now to shoot it.
Pic four is my restocked 300mag.  felt recoil with this stock is less than my 06 Encore with original wood. Comments and suggestions appreciated.
