speer hotcore bullets
« on: October 11, 2011, 05:34:31 PM »
Has anyone used speer hotcore bullets in their tenders for deer? I've read somewhere that they will expand at lower velosities then other softpoint bullets. I just got my 12" 257 Raptor from Gary Reeder and would like to try the 100gr speer and the 87gr hornady sp varmint bullets for deer hunting this season.the 100gr bullets should be getting 2300-2400fpc mv. Still working up a good load and I don't want to have to order nosler bt's. Thanks for any info.

In general Speer Hot Cor bullets are not soft nor are they particularly hard. The idea of hot core is to keep the jacket and lead core from separating. If you use their BT's be aware that they are not Hot Cor and expand faster then the equivalent FB.

The other bullet you mentioned according to your post is a varmint bullet. Why would you want to use it on Deer when it is designed for much smaller critters?

The 235gr hot core works really well in my 375 JDJ. Crank it up to 2400fps and wonderful stuff happens on the pointy end.

Many 6.5 JDJ shooters have used the 6.5mm 120 gr Speer HotCore for many years while deer hunting. Usual velocities are appx. 2400 fps. The 120 gr Nosler BT is another favorite. I think most would agree that the Speer is a little tougher bullet than the Nosler BT. The Nosler Partition is tougher yet and could be used for large bodied deer.

The front section of the Nosler PT's is relatively soft. The "toughness" comes after the partition.
