You say your hunting smaller whitetail deer then all you need is a 6.8SPC loaded with 95gr Barnes TTSX I am getting 2825fps with an 18.6" barrel these 95gr TTSX are designed to expand below 1700fps in soft tissue which makes this a 350 yard deer rifle/cartridge combo.

If you are looking for more energy I'd look at the Hornady 6.5 Creedmore or a 6.5X284...

What every caliber you choose,I would check on the price of brass and availability. Some brass that have been talk about could cost you $1 OR $2 DOLLARS A EACH.

why not try a 7mm-08rem? it is a good performer that doesn't kick you in the teeth.

i have one, not in an Encore barrel yet though,

it is less common to see in hunting camps but brass can be made easily from 308 win

6.8 SPC has no history but is quite interesting.
