some people don't listen
« on: October 12, 2011, 11:20:32 AM »
my sister in law has been elk hunting and took her husbands 300 mag. the thing kicks like an ornery mule. i suggested my .270 handi. to day they had a shot at a bull and they found out that the 300 is too much gun. so they are taking out the .270 i just need to sight it in.
i don't have reloading stuff yet so does any one suggest a factory hunting load, it is there dime. i'm thinking 150 grn. but not necessarily
i have some 150 round nose federals. but i don't know about their range or accuracy?

21,
I would shoot whatever groups the best in your rifle. The .270 Win is a capable cartridge and can be relied upon even with 130gr bullets. Just remember that shot placement is everything. This Hornady load is with a bullet that I have much faith in. In my 30-06 it's a serious game killer and has remarkable accuracy.

I can't believe people would shoot at game with their first shot with a particular rifle.  The first question that popped into my mind..."what happened to the elk??"  It doesn't sound like they got it.

My buddy, Wayne Flatt down the road from me got a 6x6 a couple of years back with a .270 at about 300 yards.  A one shot kill.  I've never asked him what ammo he was using, but I'm sure it was factory since he doesn't reload.

Federal Premium with 150 Nosler PT has grouped under an inch at 100 in every .270 rifle I've owned admittedly none were handi rifles. If it will shoot in yours there is no better choice.

+1 to GB
Dinny is on point there too , Sister-in-law took her first ( a nice 3x3 ) with the 270 wsm using the 130 win. supremes .. Neither the guide nor myself have ever seen a elks heart lay out flat like a fish fillet but her elks sure did, great shot on her part .. The animal made it 10-15 yards.
I'm partial to the hornady inter-bond 150gr ... Used this bullet on my first buffalo hunt ( 308 mind you) .
On another note , Dinny   I sure am glad to see pictures of you home safe with your family..

thanks for your coments
i grew up shooting my fathers winchester 70 in a .270.
in fact the only time ive ever seen him miss was the first shot on his lifetime buffalo tag, he was so excited he shot her through the nose. the next shot put her down in 5 steps. i believe he was shooting 150 grn power shocks (this was about 20 years ago, i was 5)
he taught my brothers and i and always said that his father took elk with a .22
Its the hunter not the gun.
i was just wondering if all these new $40 a box rounds was worth it or just hype making more hype so they can charge more

My Dad and Uncle used .270 for elk and their bullet of choice was either a 150 Nosler partition or 150 Speer Grand slams, depended on availability at the time. I couldn't tell you the load they used as it was many years back.
And your 40.00 a box comment, I do believe the premium bullets in those rounds are worth every cent if they are designed for the game you are hunting, and shoot good in your rifle.   thejanitor

First off I will have to tell you I am not an elk hunter, although I would very much love to be.  Deer is what we have an abundance of around here. (NW TN)  My buddies and I like using our Handis to put as many as we can in the freezer.

I have a friend that has a .270 Handi, and his likes Remington Core-lokt.  Now his is a few years old, probably 2001 or so when he bought it new, if that makes any difference.  (mfg. changes being what they are at H&R)  I don't know for sure what grain bullet he shoots.  Wal-Mart here has a sale on them right now, just shy of $20 for a box, plus tax.

I will have to say +1 on the premium bullets in the premium rounds, as long as they shoot good in your particular rifle.

That being said, if Core-Lokts, or any good conventional bullet, shoot good in your rifle, what else would you need?

The federal premium 130 gr sierra game kings patterned in my .270.  I swithced to winchester 130 grain cheapo's  and got 3/4" groups at 100.

I haven't shot elk with a 270, but I've worked up a 150gr Nosler Partition load with IMR4350 specifically for elk for a 270 Ultracomp barrel that I sold to another member here, it shot the first two rounds touching at 100yds, I never worked on the forend since I was only selling the barrel.

Similar to what I was thinking in the .270 Tinnchester!  I've killed two cow elk with the .270 and the 150grain bullets have a similar sectional density as the 180 grain .30/06 bullets!

Personally I prefer a bigger slug and bore shooting elk, contrary to tales about Jack O'Connor slewing everything in the wolrd with 130's.  Altho shot placement is indeed the FIRST STEP to success after pulling the trigger.  ;D

Grabbing that .300 and rushing off didn't sound at all 'impressive.'  If they missed?  Yep!  Oh well!  The .270 kills like greased lightening - took almost 2 dozen BG gaminals with it.  Have since gone to the .280, or the .30/06 when the .280 isn't available.

But if I still shot a .270 and wanted one load for Western States hunting, I'd either work up a load with 140grn Accubonds (150's in the accubond if available), or 150 Partitions.
