Carrying extra ammo?
« on: October 10, 2011, 05:15:24 PM »
What do you guys do for carrying extra shots?

I've seen some very nice looking leather covers for some of the lever guns, do you know of anything like that for us?

I'm going to complicate things further with a thumbhole stock on my gun.  There's a small area on the back that I could fit two shells if someone sells a sleeve.

What would be really nice is something leather that you could lace on that had two small loops on it that you could fit two extra shells on.  I don't think it'd get in the way much.  My only worry is that having them out there exposed would be a problem.

I like this ammo holder available for, as I recall, less than $10 at MidwayUSA.  Leather looks nice but it's not so nice if it gets wet, stains cartridges, etc.

The one downside is that said holder tends to move forward under recoil.  I solved this problem by burning a hole in the underside, reinforcing the edges with thread and putting the sling swivel stud through the hole.

Over the years I went through several like those Grumulkin mentioned, those that you wear on your wrist, tried slings with a couple of cartridge loops, vests with cartridge sleeves, and was not satisfied with any of them, including the ones I made myself from leather.   I settled on belt carry in ammo carriers or wallets I made myself that were every bit as fast to access and held enough for hunts where several animals could be harvested.   Just too many years growing up and living on a ranch maybe where you hunted with what ammo your firearm held, were expected to make the first shot count, and even if you did "sneak" extra ammo it was just stuffed in a pants pocket.   ;)
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

After hunting with single shots for over 50years , I found the best way to carry additional ammo is a thing called a "pocket". Why hang additional garbage on the stock , you increase weight of carry and add something that can catch on things...anyway...It only takes one shot.....

The additional "garbage" on the stock doesn't bother me a bit.  The pocket thing is fine except the cartridge rattles when I walk; maybe your pockets are different and the cartridges don't rattle.  I've also used and, in fact still use on occasion, cartridge carriers on my belt.  The thing I like about carrying them on my stock is that it keeps the cartridge securely with the gun; I reach for the gun and know that the cartridges on that stock are for that gun which is handy if a couple of guns taking different ammunition are in close proximity.

Hey "G" why are you covering up that pretty wood with that black ace bandage?  show me your wood and I'll show you mine.

Im talking big game hunting here...not varmits or predators where multiple targets can be fired on.

I carry 1 cartridge in each of my front pants pockets and shirt or jacket pockets.  That way any pocket I can get to provides me with a fresh round and there is no noise from ammo rubbing and clanking together.  This provides 4 additional rounds which is plenty for most day hunting.

Nothing extra to buy and quick access.

When more ammo is likely to be needed it is carried in my fanny or back pack where it can be used to "refresh" my pockets as needed.

It is pretty wood but the "black bandage" is quite practical.

I guess what method you use to carry extra ammo is dependent on the kind of shooting you do.  Where I live a groundhog or other varmint can show up at unexpected moments and I want a gun available with the required ammo.  At times there will be multiple targets as well and it is faster to get a round off the stock rather than fish around in a pocket especially when in the sitting or prone position.  So, with single shot long guns I like a bandage while magazine fed guns have no bandage but do have a full magazine and, if a Blaser, one in the chamber.

Nice thing about the 10 round ace bandage shown in reply #1 is that you can cut it with scissors to hold only a few rounds. Sear the cut edges with a lighter so it won't fray. Slip it on the stock and leave a small edge hanging off the recoil pad so it stays put. Short enough to miss the swivel stud. Easy enough to slip off when  you wear the gun to church. Or slip it over your other wrist.

But this "pocket" sounds interesting. Can somebody post pics of one? JK.

My son got me this cammo cartridge holder, I believe at Wal Mart, for about $12. Rather than being elastic the back side has a velcro closier. It's made bt Allen. I also have a cartridge holder that holds 20 cartridges that goes on my belt.

TC makes a 2 cartridge holder that slips over the barrel and forearm and sits about even with the front of the scope on the right side. I used it for several years but now I use a 3 cartridge wrist holder that is just the small end of a generic 10 round elastic stock holder. I cut it off and melted the edges with a lighter to keep it from fraying. I wear it underneath my left wrist and for me, it is near perfect.
