357/358 180 grain JSP or JFP????
« on: October 16, 2011, 12:01:40 PM »
Who has .357/.358 180 grain JSP or JFP bullets (for the 357 Mag/Max) for sale? I'm having a hard time finding them. I did a Google search and it changes it to JHP.

Midsouth carries a Speer 180 SP (rifle) in stock and a 170 grain (pistol) currently out of stock.

I just got in the Speer 180's and a box of Hornady 180 XTP's from Midsouth.  The Speers are a little high but I wanted to try them out.  They also stock a Speer 180 flat-point as well.  The XTP's were pretty reasonable, under $20 for 100 IIRC

I am looking for the 357 Mag/Max bullets not the rifle (should have clarified that) bullets. I have a supply of the 170 gr Gold Dot Soft Points and am looking for some 180 gr bullets now, I know Remington made them at one time. Thanks.

I have some of the XTP's and they are great, what I'm looking for is what Remington uses in their 180 gr JSP or JFP loaded ammo, I am going to call them Monday. Thanks.

Nice try but that is a hollow point bullet, not quite what I'm looking for. Thanks for trying though.

Looks like I will have to, I have a mold that's spits out one kind of like that one from Grizzly and one 180 grain Lee mold  from a group buy on Cast Boolits or somewhere.

You might have difficulty finding a 180+ gr JFP. The issue I see is the overwhelming popularity of the 357 mag & 38 Spl vs. the almost total lack of guns made in .357 Max. With 180 gr bullets in a 357 mag, a hollowpoint and possibly a softer core are necessary for expansion because of the velocity limits. The Max has a considerably higher muzzle velocity, and could actually make use of a flat point, and maybe even a slightly harder core. I think you'd get more use from a 180 to 200 gr LFN style bullet from LBT. A plus would be the ability to order it with the crimp groove where you want it, to set the overall length where you need it for your application. Are you shooting a contender?

I have 2 different styles of the 180 gr bullets I cast for. I shoot them in a 357 x 44 B&D Encore rifle barrel, a Marlin 94 in 357 x 44 B&D, a 357 Max Encore pistol barrel, a Ruger  77/44 in 357 x 44 B&D and a Uberti Baby Rolling Block in 357 Mag.

Sorry Guys but those are rifle style bullets , the last one is an SSP bullet but it is still a 'rifle style' bullet, spire point style. The one I want looks just like the 158 JSP in most 357 ammo but is 180 gr.

I feel your pain. I would suggest the Speer .38 caliber 170 grain Gold Dot (unicore) soft point bullet but I can't seem to find any in stock. Just no way to separate the jacket and core.

Steve,

I too have been down this road before. If your looking for a hunting bullet, and your NOT using a revolver. I have been shooting game with these calibers, from Contenders and rifles, for some time. Before choosing it as a hunting bullet, I have shot hundreds into water jugs and wet phone books testing them. I find that all hollow points over expand at rifle velocities. (Sans the 180 XTP HP. I wish they offered a FP version for the maxi!) In my book, there are but two bullets that are top choices for a hunting bullet, depending on caliber. If your punching paper, well this is kinda moot as any bullet weight is likely fine. But if optimal bullet performance is needed, IE velocity and energy, these two are my choice.

357 MAGNUM:
Hornady 158Gr XTP FP bullet. Forget about the 180, and 170 its getting too heavy and reduces powder cap too much for the smaller Mag casing. The 158 FP bullet is pure poison on smaller/med sized big game from a longer, non vented barrel. Load it to top velocity and accuracy from your firearm and it will treat you very well. It will expand like a classic big game bullet. It will smash bones and penetrate deeply. (For a powder, I like 296/H110 )
Believe me, If your hunting with a longer and or non vented barrel, in 357 MAGNUM, NO OTHER BULLET is needed.

If your hunting with a Rev I like the 140 Speer and newer XTP bullets. I also see Hornady has a 140 FTX bullet. I have not yet used it. But the 140 HP's have taken a few Whitetails for me and have performed perfectly. The med weight HPs penetrate will form my 8" Colt Whitetailer barrel.

In the 357 MAXIMUM:
Again a Hornady bullet, this time a rifle .358 dia 180 Gr Single Shot Pistol Bullet. The maxi has more powder cap and CAN handle the 180's nicely. (I have also recently tried the Hornady FTX200's built for the 35Rem with some success, but not tested nearly as much) I do like the 180 XTP as well, but find accuracy and performance edge going to the SSP. Same story with this bullet. I have harvested a number of game with it with numerous DRT harvests. I have fired it into water jugs and wet phone books as well as shoulders ribs and lungs. At close range, say muzzle to 35/40 yards I do find it a bit fragile at top velocities if major bones are hit. But I have never lost a head of game and I have never had minimal penetration. I simply have seen most of the bullet disintegrate AFTER pulverising the bone it struck. I load line to top velocity from my barrels and have had 100% recoveries over many animals and many years. (My powder of choice, AA 1680)

If your in a Rev with the maxy, I would try that 170GD or even the same 158 FP for the maggie. The vel loss will be somewhat recovered by going lighter bullet to keep energy numbers up. I do not have a revolver in this caliber but I do have a 10" Contender barrel. So my experience with this barrel length, on game is limited.

I hope this helps more than it confuses. Again, If paper targets are your aim, about any bullet that shoots well will suffice.
I do not know of any .357 or .358 180 Gr SP bullet in "pistol" profile. I did buy a bunch of Rem 180 scalloped HP bullets bulk packed from Midway years ago... maybe call them. Cabelas also carried REM bullets, I am sure the 180 HP is still offered, maybe they can find them for you.

Good luck,
 CW

Thanks for all of your input Guys, I have and do shoot almost every bullet you Guys have listed but I need some more of the 180 gr. JSP that I believe Remington put out several years ago, I had some but ran out a few years ago. I have an encore Rifle barrel in 357 x 44 B&D that I had throated for 180 gr. bullets so it wouldn't eat up case capacity and it shoots those bullets very well. Remington doesn't make them anymore at least for reloading. I have a supply of the Speer 170 gr Gold Dot Flat Point and the shoot great in my marlin in 357 x 44 B&D. The bullet I want is not a spire point, cast, JHP, FMJ, rifle bullet. I am looking for a 180 gr JSP or JFP.

If you want something really cool, Remington used to offer 150 gr .358 rifle bullets. I have a box of these in my curious bullets box. A friend hunts deer with them in a 356 Winchester, which he shoots with only one round in the tube & one in the chamber, since the bullets a spirepoint. Those bullets really sizzle! They could only be useful in a single shot, they would be too long for a revolver.

I still have about 300 to 400 of these packed up back home from when I first started playing with the 357 Maxi. They did real good in the Maxi. I need to send for some and try them in the 357 mag rolling block rifle. Unfortunately the won't work in the Ruger 77/357 x 44 B&D  (too long) or my 94 Marlin in 357 x 44 B&D (the pointed bullet/primer thing). Maybe some day Remington will see fit to reintroduce the 180 JSP for components.

Steve,

I looked hard at a Bain and Davis back when the I was shooting Silhouette. But decided on the Herrett...then the Maxi when the HS issues became too bothersome form the Herrett. Had I gone with the B&D I likely would still have it as you do.

I was unaware Rem offered a pistol profile 180Gr SP bullet. As I said, I have fired many of the scalloped HP 180's and got them from Midway in bulk boxes. I would say your best bet is the new 170 DC bullet from Speer. Another one hat slipped under my radar, as I was going to correct you saying Speer 170 GD bullets are HP and SP. Tech I would be correct, but the hunting GD morphed into the Deep Curl and now I see that they DO offer a 170SP in "pistol" profile. I have used the 170GD and found it a bit soft (As I said) but serviceable as the game was humainely harvested and I did get a exit hole.
I will add some of these Deep Curl 170 SP bullets to my next order... ;)

Good luck,
 CW

Did the 170 gr. Speer Gold Dot Soft Point turn into the 170 gr. Deep Curl? I have 3 or 4 boxes of the GD Soft Point left, my 94 Marlin really likes them.

Good question...
I just checked what I had left and I have two new boxes of the 170 SP's #4230 as well. I now this Deep Curl line of bullets is new (er) but not sure of when it hit the shelves...
