Rossi Tuffy 22/410 combo

I just picked one of these up and appears to be a fun little camp gun.  Does anybody happen to have one and would it be worth getting some 410 slugs for it?  With the 410 barrel in place it only weighs 3lbs and breaks down to less than 19" in length.

I bought this combination a couple of years ago as a start-up/squirrel gun for my grandchildren.  With the .22 barrel in place it is not very accurate and difficult to use with the factory sights.  The .410 barrel is another story as it does what you would expect a .410 to do.  Using 2 1/2" ammo is not an answer except to introduce a child to mild recoil.  With 3" ammo, it will dispatch a rabbit or squirrel if the user is close enough to the animal.  Recoil with the longer ammo is stout as the gun is quite light with no recoil pad.  A couple of my grandsons prefer my Ithaca 20ga as the weight of this larger shotgun offsets the more powerfull cartridge.  In my opinion, using rifled slugs in a .410 should only be used to shoot paper as this gun is not powerfull enough for a deer or hog.  In addition to this combo, I own 2 Rossi revolvers and a M92 .357 lever and find them all to be decent guns for the price.  It becomes tougher all the time to find the quality used years ago in the firearms industry without spending a lot of money and still being lucky with your purchases.

A 410 slug from a shotgun  (not a revolver such as the Judge) produces approx. the same ft/lbs of energy as a .357 magnum from a 6" barrel.   I have an older Rossi Matched Pair with a full choke .410 barrel and I can tell you it will take bunnies and squirrel with no problem if you do your part.

But in my opinion slugs flat hurt !!   My old .410 with full choke kicks worse than my 45-70 does with slugs!
